140R4021Q0004 – BGNDRF Portable Media Filter for PFAS Removal Solicitation Questions/Answers as of 1/20/2021:

1. The objectives mention a 7,000 BV capacity before breakthrough of any PFAS compound

· Could you provide a list of the PFAS compounds you will be testing for?

ANSWER: PFOA, PFOS, and PFHxS.

2. Can you provide a range of PFAS inlet levels?

ANSWER:

· PFOA = ~ 210 ppt

· PFOS = ~ 18 ppt

· PFHxS = ~ 10 ppt

· Total PFAS = ~ 240 ppt (~ the sum of the above compounds. Others are ND)

3. Are casters required if the system can easily be moved by forklift?

ANSWER: As per the solicitation, the unit shall have casters, but we are interested to know if this presents a challenge. Casters would be used most of the time to move the system around a ~10,000 sq ft. indoor bay with concrete floors. The forklift would be needed to move the system around outside where the ground is mostly rocks and dirt. While it is possible to use the forklift to move the system around inside, there are some tight spaces between electrical/water infrastructure that may prohibit ideal placement of the system (it would be substantially easier to roll it into place).

4. Should sampling ports be provided on the system?

ANSWER: Yes

5. Do you have a preferred media/media combination as we are flexible?

ANSWER: The media we have pilot tested is Calgon F400 and it achieved the ~ 7000 BVs before breakthrough when treating saline/brackish water at ~5,800 mg/L TDS with near saturation of calcium sulfate (CaSO4). Other medias/combinations will be considered if there is sufficient data that shows its/their ability to completely remove PFOS, PFOA, and PFHxS in saline/brackish conditions at 5,800 mg/L TDS or above, and near saturation for CaSO4. Ion exchange media will not be considered because it will alter the effluent water quality too much (we are a desal research facility and need to provide mostly un-altered groundwater to clients for testing).

6. Should the system have its own feed pump capable of producing flow up to 30 GPM?

ANSWER: Yes. The indoor test bays can provide water at ~60 psi through a 2" PVC pipe, in which case a pump may not be entirely necessary. However, the outdoor application will require a pump because we will be treating the dead space in a storage tank.
