C. Keep fluid and atomization pressures as low as practicable and consistent with good spraying results.

3.06 MIXING AND THINNING

A. Vinyl coatings require thinning for spray application, except zinc rich vinyl coating (Formula VZ-108D) which normally requires thinning only under certain weather conditions.

B. Thinners for vinyl coatings shall be as follows:

Approximate Ambient Air Temperature (Degrees Fahrenheit)

Below 50 MEK

Between 50 and 70 MIBK

Above 70 MIAK

C. Vary amount of thinner to produce a wet spray that prevents deposition of semi-dry particles on surface.

1. Thin vinyl coatings as necessary up to approximately 25 percent (1 quart/gallon of base coating) with appropriate thinner. Elevated ambient and steel temperatures may require up to 40 percent thinning for satisfactory application.

3.07 COATING APPLICATION

A. Apply number of coats and coating thickness specified in Coating Tabulations.

B. After surface preparation and cleaning, apply stripe coat and primer coat before rust bloom (flash rust) occurs or the same day, whichever is sooner. Re-clean surface areas not receiving stripe coats and primer coat within this period.

C. Spray coating, except areas inaccessible to spray may be applied by brush.

D. Stripe Coats:

1. Apply extra spray pass.

2. Apply to edges, corners, interior angles, pits, seams, crevices, junctions of joining members, rivets, nuts, threads, bolts, washers, weld lines, and similar surfaces before applying double spray coat.

E. Spray Application of Vinyl Resin Coating Using Double Spray Coats:

1. Apply spray passes at same coverage rate.

2. Apply spray in half-lapped passes.

3. After first spray pass dries to at least a near tack-free condition, follow by second spray pass applied where practicable at right angles to the first.

4. Rivets, bolts, and similar surface projections: Spray coating from every direction to ensure complete coverage of faces.

5. Unless otherwise specified, do not apply more than 2.0 mils average DFT per double spray coat.

F. Pits, Cracks, and Crevices:

1. Fill with coating insofar as practicable.

2. Ensure pit surfaces are thoroughly covered and cracks and crevices are sealed off against entrance of moisture.

G. Except where otherwise indicated, an undercoat of vinyl-type coating may receive the next coat after the undercoat is tack-free and firm to the touch, provided that no speed-up or delay in recoating schedule shall cause film defects such as sags, runs, air bubbles, air craters, or poor intercoat adhesion.

H. Re-clean surfaces which become contaminated between application of coating and applying next coat.

I. Apply even film of uniform thickness tightly bonded to substrate or previous coats:

1. Coats shall be smooth, free from defects such as skips, runs, sags, drips, pinholes, laps, brush marks, voids, or similar defects.

2. Coatings edges shall be sharply cut to lines.

J. Primer Coat: Cover peaks of surface profile by specified dry film thickness.

K. Alternate coat colors to differentiate between coats.

L. Prevent over spray or dry spray. When such conditions occur, clean surface of over spray or dry spray prior to application of succeeding coat.

M. Zinc Rich Vinyl Primer:

1. Field mix components A, B, and C in accordance with label instructions. After mixing, keep coating covered to avoid contamination. Apply within 8 days after mixing.

2. When ambient or steel temperature is below 80 degrees Fahrenheit, coating will not normally require thinning; however, the paint shall at all times contain sufficient volatiles (thinners) to permit it to be satisfactorily atomized, to provide a wet spray, and to avoid deposition of particles that are semi-dry when they reach the surface.

3. Continuously stir coating during application at rate that will prevent zinc dust from settling.

4. Interruptions:

a. When spraying is resumed after interruption of longer than 15 minutes, vigorously whip entire length of material hose until settled zinc is redispersed.

b. Avoid long periods of permitting coating to remain stagnant in hose by emptying hoses whenever coating operation is suspended for more than 1 hour.

5. Keep material hoses as short as practicable, preferably not more than 50 feet in length.

6. Do not use equipment used for spraying zinc rich vinyl primer for spraying other vinyl coatings without first thoroughly cleaning, since other coatings will not tolerate zinc contamination.

7. An average dry film thickness of up to 2.5 mils may be applied in one double-spray coat.

8. Unless specifically authorized, not more than 8 days shall elapse after application of VZ-108D zinc rich coat before succeeding coat is applied.

3.08 REPAIR OF DEFECTIVE OR DAMAGED COATED SURFACES

A. Repair defective or damaged coatings as approved by COR:

1. Where repair of defective or damaged areas of coatings requires partial removal of coating, test adhesion of remaining coating with a knife blade applied under the edge of remaining coating. Remove coatings which lift.

2. Physically repair pinholes, blisters, air bubbles, or dry spray by scrubbing with a brush or rag wet with ketone solvent before applying succeeding coat.

3. If corrosion is present, spot repair defective area. Prepare area using specified surface preparation method. Scrub remaining coating with ketone.
