About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document (Amendment 01) for RFQ# 140P8626Q0013 regarding Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Services at Alcatraz Island, issued by the National Park Service.
The document clarifies operational details for the EMT contract. No current contractor is providing these services. The contracted EMT will work at Alcatraz Island, where the medical office is located in the main cellhouse with supplies and ambulance keys stored in the dock office. Staff-only boats operate with the first departure at 8:20 AM and last boat at 9:30 PM during summer months. The island receives approximately 1.6 million visitors annually (about 133,000 per month) and experiences a wide range of medical incidents, from slips and falls to cardiac arrest. EMTs must be certified and trained to administer epinephrine using vials and syringes. Supporting agencies for medical emergencies include the San Francisco Fire Department and United States Coast Guard. A helipad exists on the island but is not currently in use. Law enforcement is not permanently stationed on the island but responds to emergencies when called and occasionally patrols. Some park staff are cross-trained as EMTs and may assist with incidents. The National Park Service provides a stocked cache of medical equipment to the contracted EMT, with the Emergency Services Coordinator handling equipment replacement requests.
