CE-01.01-100 TACTILE FORT MODEL - FORT POINT, CA. 1861
Visitors read about the fort at the time of its completion in 1861 and are encouraged to interact with a 3D tactile bronze model of Fort Point. This model will highlight different features of the fort as it appeared ca. 1861. A scaled model of a 45-foot long standard city bus will also be on display for size reference. The arches of the casemates within the fort should be noted through indentions in the model, but do not need to be fully opened.
The model allows both sighted visitors and those with low or no vision the ability to explore the physical, outside structure of the fort. The model will be located next to a large, tactile flipbook which allows for visitors who are not able to access the upper layers of the fort to experience those elements as well.
Fort Point is a classic brick and granite 19th-century American coastal fort, accessed through only one entrance, the sally port. The Fort is shaped in a modified rectangle with a center parade, two bastions and the gorge on the land front. The fort rises in four tiers above the San Francisco Bay; three tiers are casemates with embrasures facing the sea, and the fourth was armed on all four sides with guns mounted en Barbette. Fabricator to coordinate with park on final details and placement/height based on site conditions.
Dimensions: Approximately 16” wide x 9” long. Height of fort and adjacent figure should be scaled proportionately.
Placement: As noted in Drawings Package and Graphics Package. Fabricator to coordinate with Park on final component design.
Materials and Construction Method: Bronze model.
Elements to be shown:
- Scaled Model of the Fort
- A scale model of a 45-foot long standard city bus
- Sally Port Doors
- Casemates Archways
- Shot Furnace
- Gun Emplacements
- Cannon on Barbette Tier
See reference images on the following page.
Lighthouse was completed in 1863 and should not be included. SHOT FURNACE
SALLY PORT DOORS
The sallyport opening is framed by a classical entablature. There are brick pilasters with granite capitals, topped by a brick frieze and architrave course, with a granite cornice at the very top. To enter the fort there is a pair of heavy wooden doors, each 4’-10” wide x 9’-4” high, topped by a segmental brick arch with granite keystone and spring stones.
GUN EMPLACEMENTS
CANNON
BASTION
CASEMATE ARCHWAYS
There are 30 casemates on the each tier of the fort. They are generally 15 ft. wide and of varying depths. All of the casemates have similar features and are aligned continuously around three sides of the parade ground. These archways should be noted in relief of the main fort structure.

CE-01.01-100 TACTILE FORT MODEL - FORT POINT, CA. 1861 (CONT.)
BASTIONS AND QUOINS
There are two flanking towers, referred to as “bastions,” jutting out from the east and west faces of the main fort.
There are also smaller walls, referred to as flanks, which form obtuse angles at the corners and give the fort a more rounded appearance.
The walls are 7-feet thick with Folsom granite quoins at each of the corners. The foundation of the fort is constructed of Chinese granite 10-feet thick. These elements are common around the entire exterior. Refer to “Abbreviated Fort Point Historic Structure Report” for more information.
BARBETTE TIER/CANNON AND GUN EMPLACEMENTS
The Barbette tier is essentially the roof, or the top tier, of the fort. It was designed as a deck where cannon were mounted on exposed positions rather than in enclosed casemates. The deck of the Barbette tier is concrete now, but was originally covered in grass. The original octagonal cannon mounts on the Barbette tier were designed to hold 10” Columbiads.
ELEVATIONS
The front of the fort, referred to as the Southwest Gorge elevation, is a brick wall, 110’ long and 40’ high. The East Face, facing the parking lot today, is 70’ long. See “Abbreviated Fort Point Historic Structure Report,” pgs 74-79 for complete detailed information on the fort’s height and wall measurements.
SHOT FURNACE
This 15’ brick shot furnace was constructed to allow soldiers to heat their cannon projectiles before firing, increasing the possibility of catching the enemy ships on fire. The shot furnace was located on the interior of the parade ground in the northeast corner of the quadrangle.

THE BOTTOM LEVEL housed the Fort’s only entrance through the sally port. This level also includes areas for gunpowder storage and cannon mounts. The guard room located adjacent to the sally port allowed for soldiers on sentry duty to safely observe and defend the fort’s entrance. As weapons technology advanced, the fort’s brick walls and reinforced sally port doors provided less security and defense.

THE MIDDLE TWO TIERS of Fort Point housed different functions. During the fort’s military period, these levels held cannon mounts in enclosed casemates, quarters for officers and enlisted soldiers, storage rooms, and offices. During the Golden Gate Bridge’s construction, workers repurposed rooms as workspaces and offices, and a maze of wooden scaffolding enveloped the outside of the fort.

CITY BUS (FOR REFERENCE)
This scale model bus should be styled after a typical city transit bus, which averages 45’ in length and a width between 8’ to 9’. Illustration and images included for general reference, but bus should not be stylized after a particular make and model of buses so as to make it more accessible to a wider range of visitors.
CE-02.03-000 FIGURE OF SOLDIER ON GUARD DUTY
Visitors view a segment of a banquette and learn about the functions of a Guard Room and a Sally Port. A monochromatic figure of a soldier on guard duty shows historic activity at Fort Point as it would have occurred in 1861. The Sally Port, the room to which the figure will face, served as the only entrance to the fort to limit enemy access. Soldiers in the guard room could walk atop an elevated banquette, to see into the Sally Port entrance and fire at the enemy from a protected position, if needed.
This scene will include a concrete stylized figure positioned to be holding a rifle and aiming down its sight into the Sally Port through the opening slit in the wall. The soldier should be positioned as seen in the rendering below, with his face and torso facing the visitors as they walk in and his back side facing the wall (left-handed aiming style). The soldier should be approx. 5’8” tall (the average height of a soldier in the Civil War) and stylized with appropriate clothing and gear to represent a soldier from Company H, 3rd Artillery, posted at the fort from July 1863 through August 1865.
Fabricator to coordinate with Park on final design of figure.
Dimensions: To be determined by fabricator. Figure based on 5’8” male.
Placement: As noted in drawings package.
Materials and Construction Method: M4 material code - stylized concrete figure.
Above: Current conditions and soldier presented.
Members of the guard were expected to remain in uniform with accouterments on and weapons close at hand.
For additional information, see Revised United States Army Regulations of 1861, accessed here: https://archive.org/ details/revisedunitedst00deptgoog/page/n9
CLOTHING
Soldiers at Fort Point were issued caps, hats, coats, trousers, flannel shirts, drawers, shoes, and overalls.
According to the Revised United States Army Regulations of 1861: “The uniform coat for all enlisted foot men shall be a single breasted frock of dark blue cloth, made without plaits, with a skirt extending one-half the distance from the top of the hip to the bend of the knee. . . [trousers] will be dark blue cloth . . . and buttons yellow, the same is used by Artillery.”
Example of fatigue forage caps.
CANTEEN
Soldier would have likely had a tin canteen covered with woolen cloth, which should be included with the figure.
RIFLE
Enlisted men at Fort Point were furnished with .58 caliber rifled muskets, most likely Springfield Model 1861, the most widely used rifle in the Civil War. The figure’s gun should be stylized to look like one of these rifles.
A detailed model of a Springfield Model 1861 rifle can be found here: https://sketchfab.

CE-04.07-100-BRONZE MODEL OF FORT POINT SITE - EXPLORING THE GROUNDS
Visitors read about many of the historic structures that no longer exist at Fort Point and are able to explore the Fort Point site through a tactile, bronze topographic-model of the site as it appeared in the late 1800s. The lighthouse keepers’ homes, Fort Point wharf, Battery East and West, the bridge into the fort, seawall, engineer’s quarters, quartermaster quarter, and the fort itself are included on both the map and the tactile key. The map includes an etched zinc key. Reference images for the structures and landscape are included on the following pages. The map should show the topographic layout of the land and meet all ADA requirements for accessiblity. The fabricator should coordinate with the Park on the final design and depth of this custom element, as well as final placement of certain buildings which no longer exist.
Dimensions: As noted in Drawings Package.
Placement: As noted in Drawings Package.

BATTERY WEST AND EAST
Following the Civil War, innovative revisions in seacoast defense led to the creation of earthwork batteries to help defend the Golden Gate. The first of these, Battery West, was completed in 1873 and featured twelve 15-inch Roman cannon. Battery East was completed the following year. When the Endicott-period batteries were constructed, Battery West was almost completely destroyed, limiting the number of references, while Battery East works are still visible.

Right: Additional reference maps and images.
Seacoast Fortifications, San Francisco Harbor, Historic Resource Study (May 1979) contains the most detailed accounts of the construction of Battery East and West. Please use this source, in conjunction with the reference images and map provided, to create an informed recreation of these now altered and destroyed earthen works.
Above: Additional reference images for Fort Point wharf and terrain.
SEAWALLS
The granite seawall surrounding the Fort Point area was completed in two phases, as shown on the map to the right as De Russy’s Seawall and Elliot’s Seawall. De Russy’s seawall was first completed and ranges in height from 2-feet above sea level to 10-feet above sea level. The Fort Point Historic Structure Report contains a detailed account on the construction methods and materials used to construct these seawalls.

ENGINEER’S QUARTERS
Colonel Re Russy had a two-story frame house (26’6” x 30’6”) constructed on the bluff overlooking the wharf. 1-3 additional buildings were subsequently built nearby of similar shape and size which would be used for additional housing of engineers and other ranking military personnel. No images of these structures remain, but are noted in maps and described in detail in the Fort Point Historic Structure Report. Structures should be sized based on the above dimensions and stylized to look like typical wooden-framed structures of the appropriate time period, late 1850s–1880s.
Fabricator to coordinate with Park on final design details of this exhibit component.
TOPOGRAPHY
This model should include the topography of the land as accurate as possible to the time period of the late 1800s. The US Geological Survey (USGS) has detailed topographic maps of the area today (left).
These maps and details should be used in conjnction with historic photographs and the Fort Point Historic Structure Report to best match the layout of the land to the late 1800s. Fabricator to coordinate with park on final design.
