1.1 BACKGROUND:

Fort Point stands at the south side of the Golden Gate Strait, forming a substantial landmark at the entrance to San Francisco Bay. Built at the site of an old Spanish gun battery, Fort Point was one of the first major U.S. Army installations in the Bay Area. It guarded the San Francisco Bay and Harbor from the Gold Rush-era in the 1850s until World War II. Although no shots were ever fired in anger from Fort Point, it is the most tangible legacy of the Civil War in California, and represents California’s little known, yet significant, political and social involvement in the

Civil War. Built to hold four tiers of cannons, the fort is also an outstanding example of masonry mailto:michael_gabriel@nps.gov fort construction and is the only fort of its style on the West Coast of the United States. As a testimonial to the fort’s historic significance, the southern anchorage of the Golden Gate Bridge was designed to gracefully arch over it.

Fort Point became a National Historic Site in 1970 and is today managed as a district park unit within the larger Golden Gate National Recreation Area. The fort’s scenic location under the south end of the Golden Gate Bridge attracts visitors throughout the year, many of whom accidentally happen on the fort and have no idea of its significance. Over 300,000 people visited

Fort Point in 2017, with a significant number of those being international and national vacationers, particularly during the summer months.

The exhibits to be fabricated under this contract will be installed at Fort Point National Historic

Site (FOPO), at the northwest corner of San Francisco, CA. The contractor shall coordinate with

Capitol Exhibit Services, the fabricator of the rest of the exhibit components.

1.2 SCOPE:

A. Contractor shall furnish all necessary supervision, labor, tools, parts, material, equipment, appurtenances and transportation for the four exhibit components detailed below.

B. Contract documents provided by the Government will include design drawings, renderings, dimensions, material specifications, site photographs and details of the exhibit cabinetry (by others) the sculptural components are to be mounted on. This information will be made available from Michael Faw, Accessibility and Exhibit Specialist, Project Manager and

Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR), Building 201 Fort Mason, (415) 2721449, E-mail:

michael_faw@nps.gov.

1.3 PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Contractor shall provide all supervision, labor, tools, parts, material, equipment and transportation to complete the following project work items:

CE-01.01-100- Full Three Dimensional Bronze Model of Fort Point exterior, with bronze city bus for scale. See attached drawings for details. Bronze models to be lost wax cast using a

Nickel Silver Bronze alloy, ASTM B149-973, B149-976 or similar. The male model for molding may be hand sculpted, CNC cut, or 3D printed from detailed CAD drawings (available upon request). See attached drawings for details.

CE-02.03-000 Figure of Soldier on Guard Duty- Realistic figure with accurate uniform and firearm, but stylized finish. See attached drawings for details.

CE-04.07-100 Bronze Model of Fort Point Site- Exploring the Grounds. Note revisions for both extents and braille detail on page 16 of the drawing set “Sculptural Elements

2020_02_21_FOPO_FINAL.pdf”. Bronze models to be lost wax cast using a Nickel Silver

Bronze alloy, ASTM B149-973, B149-976 or similar. Male model may be hand sculpted, CNC cut, or 3D printed.

-Note: rather than a separate braille and tactile lettered plaque as show in the Exhibit Drawing package, the braille and tactile lettering is to be cast with the rest of the topographic model. The mailto:michael_faw@nps.gov forward label area will tilt down to the table mount (by others) from the crest of the highest point of the topo model.

The numbers, braille dots, and tactile letters are to be applied on a separately manufactured (as opposed to cast) plaque by Matthews Bronze or similar. Lost wax casting has not historically been of sufficiently consistent detail to meet NPS braille dot standards. See also the attached

NPS “Tactile and Braille Map Guidelines2014.pdf” for detailed braille dot specifications. The

NPS COR will use the MAD Lab (Media And Design) at San Francisco Lighthouse for the Blind to review and approve all braille text layouts.

Casemates 9-11 AV Theater- Faux painted brick panel for a projection surface inside

Casemate 10 in the West Bastion (facing north) less than 48” by 48”, Contractor and COR to confirm final size on site, with confirmation from the AV contractor Monadnock Media. Faux paint detail to be applied to Wonderboard fiberglass mesh-reinforced cement backerboard or similar coarse textured commercially available waterproof sheet stock. Paint details to be applied on site to match existing brick color, size, spacing, and texture detail. Sheet stock to be applied to inset framing (already installed by others).
