About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers (Q&A) record for the Longmire Fiber Install project at Mount Rainier National Park under contract number 140P8326Q0056, compiled as of August 5 at 8:30 AM.

The Q&A addresses technical and logistical requirements for fiber optic conduit installation. Key specifications include: preferred installation depth of 24 inches with flexibility for obstacles; Schedule 80 conduit in areas subject to heavy equipment traffic, otherwise Schedule 40; traceable or locatable mule tape to be left in all conduit for future pulls. Tree protection is prioritized wherever possible, with flexibility to deviate from the planned path to avoid root damage or rocks. For the bridge crossing, conduit should be installed on either side at low, unobtrusive heights. On the east side bridge footing, conduit will transition from the bridge via an LB fitting into ground installation, with the National Park Service assessing post-installation hazard mitigation near existing rock stairs. Vault specifications are contained in the Statement of Work (SOW), with vaults sized to accommodate future splice cases when the bridge is replaced. An existing vault at the Water Treatment road location requires NPS validation and will be replaced per SOW specifications if confirmed. The document clarifies that contractor housing is unavailable at Longmire Campground, though lodging is available within reasonable distance to the project site.

140P8326Q0056 Longmire Fiber Install Mount Rainier National Park

No additional questions have been received via email for LONGMIRE as of 8/5 at 0830.

• A question was asked about tree root protection and tree protection. (This was asked early in the walk, close the EOC where there are some young trees growing close to the path and edge of the road.)

o Trees should be protected wherever possible - small trees, such as were being referenced, may be less concerning than the mature trees in the area and we can make a determination if necessary. However, avoiding root damage and staying as far away from trees as possible is preferred. We also indicated that if a slight deviation in path is needed to avoid these situations we can discuss.

• Path deviation to avoid rocks?

o Same answer - we are open to this discussion if it becomes an issue.

• Depth - what depth is required for installation?

o Preferred 24" but we are aware that is not possible in areas and will consider rocks and other impediments as it becomes necessary. (Depth for trenching in this area is a long-standing and recognized issue.)

• What conduit rating is required?

o Schedule 80 should be used anywhere there is the possibility it will be driven over by heavy equipment. Otherwise, Schedule 40 is sufficient.

• Discussion about the bridge crossing:

o Crossing the bridge on either side is fine. Conduit, flex or not, should be low and unobtrusive.

• Footing on East side of the bridge where the fiber will exit the bridge and transition to the ground. Likely, due to constraints of space, that the conduit will run on top of the bridge footing to the edge, then transition to an LB and into the ground. There was concern it would stick out a bit on a trail and be a tripping hazard.

o We will assess the hazard after installation and the park can take measures to mitigate if needed. (This is close to the bottom of a rock set of stairs which is already not level or even.)

• Question about the vault size on each end of the bridge o Casey thinks it was in the SOW but emphasized this is for a pull site and future splice, (when the bridge is replaced.) So it would need to accommodate a splice case eventually - no larger would be needed.

• Question about the existing vault size at the bottom of the Water Treatment road - it is currently a small vault and is located slightly different than on the map.

o NPS will validate that is the right vault, (we are pretty sure it is - was put in since our last walkthrough.) If that is the right box, the location we have on the map will change slightly to meet that location, and the existing will be replaced with the vault spec'd on the SOW.

• Question if contractor could stay in the Longmire Campground during the project to minimize travel time.

o NO, park campgrounds/housing are not available to contractors. There is lodging available within a reasonable distance for contractors who desire to be closer to the Project Site.

• Question about traceable pull tape o SOW states that traceable or locatable mule tape, or like, needs to be left in the conduit.
