About this file
This is a Contractor Questions & Answers document for federal contract 140P8326Q0007, concerning the installation of a sprinkler system at Olympic National Park's Mayfield House.
The document addresses six key technical and logistical clarifications for the sprinkler system installation. The fire system must be designed to NFPA 13D standards using Steel Schedule 40 pipe with threaded couplings and fittings to maintain a clean appearance for exposed piping. Electrical work includes potential installation of a new electrical sub panel in the pump house if existing breakers cannot accommodate a two-pole breaker for the sprinkler supply tank pump, with the contractor responsible for verifying panel capacity and making necessary modifications. The riser/standpipe may be located near the bottom of the stairs rather than the laundry room, provided it is wrapped in a wood cabinet matching existing house trim, per Section 1.4.D of the Statement of Work. The contractor is permitted to run supply trenching down the driveway from the pump house to the main house. Additionally, the garage space may be used to house the water tank and electrical equipment, with the contractor responsible for verifying available slots in the garage subpanel and making any required electrical modifications to accommodate the 220-volt fire tank pump circuit and necessary power distribution.

Contractor Questions & Answers
Q1. Is the Fire System to be designed to NFPA 13D.
A1. Yes.
Q2. What Schedule Pipe is to be used?
A2. Steel Schedule 40 pipe is to be used with threaded couplings and fittings. Intent, since most of the piping will be exposed, is to have a reasonably clean appearance.
Q3. Will the contractor need to install a new electrical sub panel in the pump house if a two-pole breaker is required for the Sprinkler supply tank pump?
A3. Yes, if the existing breakers cannot be reconfigured to create an additional slot, the contractor may need to install a new panel with more slots.
Q4. Can the riser/standpipe be located near the bottom of the stairs as opposed to the laundry room?
A4. Yes, see Section 1.4.D of the SOW. The bottom of the stairs location will be approved. If the contractor is to utilize this location, the riser shall be wrapped in a wood cabinet to match the existing wood trim in the house.
Q5. Can the contractor run the trench down the driveway to supply the house from the pump house?
A5. Yes.
Q6. Can the garage space be utilized for a water tank and the garage electrical panel be used for the fire tank 220v pump circuit?
A6. Yes, the garage may be used to house the water tank and needed electrical equipment and circuits. The park is unsure of how many or if any slots are available in the garage subpanel. The contractor shall be responsible to verify and make any modifications to panels to provide necessary power and get power to equipment in the chosen location.
