Solicitation 140P8222Q0005 Answers to Questions II:

1) A 5’ pole would seem to not be very practical as it may pose other concerns with safety and “vandalism”. This seems to be the standard height of many marine debris sculptures. The pole height could be as short as 3', and there may be multiple poles. There are a few places on the trail that there is a slope. The turtle would not necessarily have to be mounted level, it could be mounted to the angle of the slope.

a .Visitors could unwittingly injure themselves by simply running in to the sculpture.

There is no danger of visitors running into it as it will be located off the trail and it can be set back from the trail edge. It would not rest on the ground. The park has had little to no vandalism regarding wayside signs in the park. This structure shall be made of durable Stainless steel and other metals that would be hard to damage.

b. Visitors may be able to touch or climb this appealing photo op and attainable low height sculpture. Would you desire such interactivity?

Visitors would not be able to interact with sculpture.

c. Unless locked, visitors could open the underbelly hatch and release the marine debris.

Hatch would be secured so visitors could not access contents. Location off trail would discourage approach to it.

d. You are still requiring a top hatch which may require the use of a ladder or other means.

Yes, this is our plan.

2) Installing the pole mounted sculpture into lava.

a. Will you have the lava area prepped with a flat surface area for such an installation?

The sculpture could be mounted directly into lava substrate with a pole and a cement base (if needed) which would then be faced with lava rock and leveled. Area is disturbed lava rock with large basalt stones that the sculpture can be anchored into.

b. Are you certain the end users will not need a concrete pad to ensure leveling of the sculpture exhibit?

Other sign panels have been sufficiently anchored into rock in this area. (see photos). This sculpture may be heavier but can still be sufficiently anchored into the ground. The sculpture will be mounted to follow the slope of ground. It would be mounted directly into the Lava rock substrate and not require a cement base. Area is disturbed lava rock with large basalt stones that the sculpture can be anchored into.

3) The revised SOW will require a whole new engineered concept design

Sculpture should be designed to original specs to eventually be mounted in a building. Some additional design work (i.e. attaching it to pole or poles) which would then anchored into ground will be required.

4) We and our artists/engineers enthusiastically embraced the concept of the turtle sculpture being suspended from the ceiling in. The original SOW and designed it accordingly with springs enabling realistic movement of the flippers, head and tail. Giving the turtle the capacity for fluid movement. At an estimated 200-275 pounds, we believe this to be a negligible weight for a ceiling load.

Our regional civil engineer has advised the park that they are not allowed to mount a sculpture from the ceiling without having a structural engineer sign off on it. A new building (next to the visitor center), is in the planning stages that would be designed for community events. This is still a few years out. The plan is to move this sculpture into the new building. The weight/load factors and all engineering for mounting this sculpture would be designed into the construction of the new building. It would then be able to be displayed as designed with movement of flippers, head and tail.
