About this file
This is a Scope of Work document for a federal construction project at Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky, dated March 20, 2026 (PMIS #344429), administered by the National Park Service Southeast Region.
The project requires replacement of all exterior public entrance door assemblies at the Mammoth Cave Visitor Center, addressing operational failures, air infiltration, hardware degradation, and ADA noncompliance. The contractor must furnish all labor, supervision, materials, equipment, and services to remove and replace existing doors. The work includes field verification of dimensions and conditions, lawful disposal of existing components, and installation of new aluminum-framed, thermally broken double doors with 1-inch insulated glass units featuring low-E coatings and bird-safe fritted safety glass. Doors must comply with ANSI A117.1, ASTM E283, E330, and E1886/E1996 standards. The scope requires twelve automatic door operators total (six replacements and six additional) with new hardwired ADA push buttons at existing embedded locations that cannot be relocated. A critical requirement mandates coordinated door pair operation where exterior and interior vestibule doors open in sequence or simultaneously to enable continuous pedestrian flow without stopping or changing direction, with final configuration verified by the Contracting Officer's Representative (COR). All hardware must be heavy-duty commercial grade, surface-mounted, and compatible with the Park's Marshall Best Security (MBS) SFIC 7-pin lock system. Additional requirements include rim exit devices (Von Duprin basis of design), manual dogging mechanisms operable with a standard 5/32-inch hex key, replication of existing graphics and vinyl decals, caulking per SMACNA and AAMA standards, and a minimum two-year warranty from final acceptance.
Work must commence within ten business days of Notice to Proceed and be completed within 180 calendar days (inclusive of ten weather days). The contractor must maintain a minimum of two operable public entrances at all times and conduct work during early spring months commencing in evening hours to minimize visitor disruption. The project includes four execution phases: verification, demolition and prep, installation, and final testing with cleaning and punch list resolution. All submittals must use CM-16 forms in PDF format. A preconstruction conference is required no later than five business days before work starts, and the contractor is responsible for site examination, scheduling of work hours with the COR, daily housekeeping, temporary utilities, and compliance with OSHA, ANSI, and NPS safety regulations.

DIVISION 01 - SHORT FORM GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
PART 1 – GENERAL
ITEM 1 – DESCRIPTION OF WORK
1.1 Background:
This project consists of replacing all exterior public entrance door assemblies at the Mammoth
Cave Visitor Center. The existing door systems have experienced operational failure, air infiltration, hardware degradation, and improper ADA functionality resulting in inefficient pedestrian flow and noncompliant accessibility conditions. The intent of this project is to provide new, durable, code-compliant, and fully functional entrance systems that maintain architectural continuity while improving accessibility, safety, and operational performance.
1.2 The Contractor shall furnish all labor, supervision, materials, equipment and services required to remove and replace existing doors in the Visitor Center.
1.3 Work Covered by the Contract Documents:
Project Location: Mammoth Cave Visitor Center, VC exterior doors. 1 Mammoth Cave Parkway, Mammoth Cave, KY 42259.
Scope of Work:
• Field verification of all door dimensions and conditions.
• Removal and lawful disposal of existing door units, hardware, frames, closers, and associated sealants and thresholds.
• Installation of new aluminum framed, thermally broken double doors with insulated glazing units (IGUs), low-e coated bird-safe fritted safety glass, weather striped and fully gasketed.
• Doors must comply with ANSI A117.1 (ADA accessibility), ASTM E283 (air leakage), ASTM
E330 (structure loading), and ASTM E1886/E1996 (impact resistance, where applicable.)
• Provide wide stile aluminum doors, clear anodized finish, 1" insulated glass units with low-E coating, continuous geared hinges, and thresholds compliant with IBC and ADA.
• Provide twelve (12) automatic door operators total, consisting of six (6) replacement operators and six (6) additional operators to support independent ingress and egress at all three entrances.
• All push/panic bars shall include manual dogging mechanisms operable with a standard 5/32" hex key, compatible with the Park’s existing access procedures. Alternative dogging methods may only be used if pre-approved by the COR and must maintain full code-compliant egress function under IBC and NFPA 101.
• Provide new hardwired ADA push buttons installed at existing locations. Existing push buttons shall be removed and replaced with new units. Wireless systems are not permitted.
3 | P a g e
• Each push button shall activate only the door leaf corresponding to the direction of travel.
Cross-activation is not permitted.
• Existing ADA push button locations are embedded within the existing stone construction and shall remain in place. Relocation of push buttons is not permitted.
• Contractor shall modify, reconfigure, and coordinate door operators, wiring, and control logic as required to ensure that each fixed push button activates the correct door leaf corresponding to the intended direction of travel.
• Inability to relocate push buttons shall not relieve the Contractor of the requirement to achieve compliant ADA operation and proper pedestrian flow.
CRITICAL ADA FLOW REQUIREMENT:
• At each entrance, ADA push button activation shall operate a coordinated door pair consisting of one exterior door and the corresponding interior vestibule door aligned with the user’s path of travel.
• Activation of the exterior push button shall open the nearest exterior door leaf and the corresponding interior door leaf to allow continuous forward movement through the vestibule.
• Activation of the interior push button shall open the nearest interior door leaf and the corresponding exterior door leaf to allow continuous exiting movement.
• Doors shall operate in sequence or simultaneously such that users can pass through both door sets without stopping, changing direction, or encountering conflicting door operation.
• Each entrance shall provide independent and intuitive operation for both ingress (entry) and egress (exit).
• Contractor shall account for fixed push button locations and shall design the system accordingly to achieve compliant and intuitive operation.
• Push button activation shall align with the natural pedestrian path of travel and shall not require users to deviate from their approach path.
• System shall be configured such that approaching users activate the correct adjacent door leaf for their direction of travel.
• Final configuration shall be verified and approved by the COR during testing.
• The completed system shall be rejected if push button activation does not correspond to the correct door leaf for the intended direction of travel.
• All hardware shall be heavy-duty commercial grade, including hydraulic closers, mortise locks, lever handles, and continuous hinges.
• Provide rim exit devices with removable mullion. Basis of design: Von Duprin or approved equal.
• All hardware shall be compatible with the Park’s Marshall Best Security (MBS) SFIC 7-pin system without modification.
• Provide surface-mounted door closers. Concealed closers are not permitted.
• Contractor shall replicate and reinstall all existing applied graphics or vinyl decals from removed doors onto the new door assemblies, including but not limited to: hours of operation, 4 | P a g e push/pull instructions, accessibility symbols, or NPS branding. New decals shall match original size, color, and placement unless otherwise directed by the COR.
• Contractor shall coordinate with the COR to ensure all lock hardware is compatible with
Mammoth Cave National Park’s existing Marshall Best Security (MBS) lock and keying system using interchangeable core cylinders keyed to Park’s standards. Cores may be provided by the
Park and installed by Contractor as directed.
• Caulking, insulation, and waterproofing to be installed in accordance with SMACNA and AAMA standards.
• Ensure weather tightness, proper drainage, and air seal for all installed assemblies.
• Testing and balancing of door closures and locking systems.
• Final adjustment, testing, and commissioning of hardware and systems.
• Removal of debris and restoration of surrounding wall finishes where disturbed.
1.4 Period of Performance:
Work to be completed within 180 calendar days from NTP (Notice to Proceed), inclusive of 10 weather days.
ITEM 2. Temporary Services
