VICK – GENERAL PEMBERTON HEADQUARTERS
SITE VISIT QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Do you or someone in your department know who was the P.E. that designed the existing shoring and bracing system?
P.E that designed structural bracing:
Jacque (Jack) Lasseigne 554 Colonial Drive Baton Rouge, LA 70806 Voice: (225) 926-1432 Fax: (225) 926-1793 Mobile: (225) 936-5456 Email: Jacque@wl-structure.com
Current Shoring (1st floor by HPTC) – evaluated by:
Nathan Hicks, PE, SE Silman 1053 31st Street NW, Washington, DC 20007 202 333 6230 Direct 202 449 6302 silman.com
Is there a Bid Bond Form included in the documents? Payment and Performance Bond forms?
Bid bond shall be submitted on SF24 (see attached). Payment and Performance bonds only get submitted if you're awarded the contract, so you have 15 days after contract award to submit them. They are completed on SF25 and SF25A.
Is their dirt under the porch slab?
It’s presumed to be dirt beneath the 1st floor porch slab.
Do we removed the concrete steps on the slab leading into the entrance door?
It will depend of the contractor’s execution whether to support and brace the steps, remove, and reinstall the steps, or rebuild with new steps. A wall tie-back has to be installed beneath these steps, so again, it will depend entirely on the contractor how best to approach this work activity.
Have I ever seen a grade-beam foundation in 1939 as they likely laid foundation on the earth?
No, historically brick foundation laid at grade with a corbel design to work like a spread footing.
Noted the pier at the far end of the porch was experiencing differential settlement. The most recent visit by the A&E observed a horizontal crack in the masonry which resulted in the current mailto:Jacque@wl-structure.com design of the grade-beam foundation system. This is a common design approached used in rehabilitating NPS historic structures to mitigate future differential settlement.
Can a dumpster be brought on site?
Yes, a dumpster can be located in the back of the building, parallel with the site’s access driveway as has been done on pervious projects. One or two work trucks can also be in back of the building on the faux brick pattern concrete slab.
Is there lawn service on the site and would it be required to provide own?
NPS currently has a contract for lawn services (street level and fence-in compound) – this may occur on weekends. We typically do not mow within the contractor’s construction limits so we’re not responsible for damages but depending when on site activities we may be paying for this service already. Lawn service is recommended during the duration of the contract. NPS will consider coordinating with the contractor since we solicit this service. The coordination will consider cleanliness/organization of the work site, maybe provide salvaged wooden skids to raise any items within the construction limits for ease of weeding around, and/or scheduling lawn service so not to inconvenience the contractor.
Will NPS allow the back addition 2nd floor large room to be used for sheet-metal work?
Access to the house is restricted to only accessing the attic. Water is currently turn-off/locked due to large water bills but use of facility restrooms is strictly prohibited. The NPS will not allow work activities to take place within the structure other than the treatment recommendations called for in the drawings and specifications.
Power for the site is to come from service on site but separate including other utilities?
Yes, provide separate power pole or attachment to existing power supply frame located at the rear of the yard. Provide all other utilities, separate from the NPS, as required.
Specs noted to provide water hose for standpipe for fire protection?
If required by the specification, the house connection will be to the standpipe hookup down at street level in the grass median between the street and sidewalk. NPS is missing the covers for theses and will be replacing the missing covers soon. We will ensure water is restored for the sprinkler system/building before work commence at the site.
Can salvaged material be stored under the house?
As evident, it is pretty cramp already with salvaged material and there is limited space. NPS will need clear access to the fire-riser room in this area.
Disposal of the salvaged slate?
If this material were removed it will provide space to store salvaged material but there is no current plan to dispose of the slated, all of which will not be used on this project.
The drawings/spec allow for use of canvas(es) of existing floor/slab covering, correct?
If this is identified in the drawings for working under protective cover, the NPS would not object to their use. Issue will only arise if attaching to existing building components.
