1. Background

Reconstruction Era National Historical Park-Replace outdated wiring Darrah Hall- SOW Page 2

Darrah Hall is a Folk-style structure located within the Penn Center Historic District on St.

Helena Island, South Carolina. The building is believed to have been constructed by students as part of a training program modeled after the Tuskegee and Hampton Institutes. Portions of the building are believed to have been constructed using salvaged materials from the original Darrah

Hall.

Historically, the structure served as a public gathering space for community activities including farmers’ days, temperance meetings, theatrical performances, and other community events. In later years the facility was used as an indoor basketball court, and portions of the court markings remain visible.

Darrah Hall is a contributing historic structure within the Penn Center campus and is now managed by Reconstruction Era National Historical Park.

In 2022, project work was completed to install a new mechanical and electrical service system including:

• HVAC equipment

• Power shutoff panels

• Electrical panel and breakers

• Electrical outlets and associated conduit

All installed service components meet current National Electrical Code (NEC) requirements and will remain in place as part of this project.

The remaining branch circuit wiring serving outlets, switches, and lighting fixtures is outdated and requires replacement to ensure safe operation and compliance with NEC standards

2. Current Conditions

Existing electrical wiring runs from the electrical panel through Schedule-40 PVC conduit located beneath the building structure.

Current observed conditions include:

• Conduit runs beneath the structure are accessible for maintenance and wiring replacement.

• Outlet junction boxes are mounted beneath the building and attached to exterior floor joists.

• Ceiling conduit is metal, exposed, and accessible for wiring replacement.

• Interior wall paneling and chair rail do not need to be removed to complete wiring replacement.

These conditions allow electrical wiring replacement to occur with minimal disturbance to the historic fabric of the structure.
