About this file

This document consists of geographic information system (GIS) maps and supporting data tracking the distribution and acreage of golden bamboo (an invasive species) at Colonial National Historical Park across multiple years.

The maps present bamboo coverage at two specific locations within the park: Cornwallis Cave and Digges House. At Cornwallis Cave, the 2023 survey identified 1.85 acres of golden bamboo coverage, shown with blue boundary delineation overlaid on a 2-foot topographic map with federal land designations. At Digges House near Yorktown Battlefield, historical bamboo data spans from 1999 through 2011, with acreage measurements as follows: 1999 (0.269 acres), 2007 (0.922 acres), 2010 (0.967 acres), and 2011 (0.711 acres). The bamboo polygons were created through on-screen digitization from aerial imagery taken at various scales and times of year, with 2011 data supplemented by GPS mapping. The documents note that minor errors may have been introduced during data creation and are intended for illustrative purposes only, not for public distribution. All mapping was conducted by the National Park Service, U.S. Department of the Interior, using the NAD 1983 UTM Zone 18N coordinate system.

Notes:

2023: 1.85 acres

DGeyer Pencil these two areas:

Top of Cornwallis cave (1)- lots of downed logs, some bamboo thicker than another. I am trying to protect the outcrop from damage in the mulching mower. Drag the bamboo into the great valley (paper street) and they will get picked up by locals or us.

Below the outcrop bluff (2), its not very dense in here, but there is a transformer in here. You can just drip the bamboo in a couple of piles here.
