UNIGRID SOURCE FILE REMEDIATION

7 Feb 2023

1. Edit Metadata Add the following metadata to the side 1 file.

Doc Title: Full Park Name plus the word, “Brochure” at the end. Ex: Zion National

Park Brochure.

Author: National Park Service, Harpers Ferry Center, Publications Description: Official National Park Service Unigrid brochure for this park.

Keywords: Park Name, State Copyright Status: Copyrighted Copyright Notice: Graphics are licensed for this brochure only. No other use is permissible without additional licensing agreements.

2. Set document language Set the document language to English USA in InDesign

3. Move fold lines Move the fold lines to the correct master page and lock each one separately.

4. Replace the arrowhead logo file Replace arrowhead with UnigridArrowhead_11-2022.psd which includes alt text and copyright information. Alt text reads, “National Park Service arrowhead logo.”

Activate the alt text in Object Export Options.

Embed graphic file and lock layer.

5. Replace the NPF logo Replace the NPF logo with the 2022 edition and ensure the logo is set to overprint black.

Activate the alt text in Object Export Options.

Embed the graphic file.

Set the correct character style and hyperlink for the associated text below the graphic logo.

6. Modify layers Set black bands to artifact.

Arrange the layers, to the extent possible, from bottom to top to achieve the correct Reading Order in the content pane. Layer changes shall not change visible content as shown in the printed edition.

7. Check color contrast Check the color contrast of primary text and map labels against the WCAG 2.0AA standard. Note any issues in the Remediation Report, but do not change colors.

8. Set Paragraph and Character Styles

Assign Paragraph and Character styles. Typographic changes are intended to enable screen reader access but shall not change the visual display of text as shown in the printed edition.

Delete unused styles.

Remove double spaces, soft and hard returns using character styles to maintain line breaks.

Assign Export Tags to all styles.

Assign the H1 tag to the brochure title in the black band on side one. All other tags follow (H2, H3, etc.) Do not use the H tag.

Assign a BlockQuote paragraph style for quotes that appear outside of other text.

Set the style for image numbers to Artifact.

Set the style for the GPO Imprint to Artifact.

Check, and correct, text set in all caps to be sure it is styled in all caps, and not keyed in all caps.

Update the run-in subheads so they can be tagged as headings (follow sample

InDesign file provided upon award).

Set the document language style to English USA. For languages other than English, assign the appropriate language style. If no language style exists in the InDesign drop down menu (indigenous languages for example) set the ISO 639 language code from the Library of Congress list, Codes for the Representations of Names of Languages.

For example, Cherokee is chr.

9. Add alt text Update Object Styles to enable Object Export Options for Alt Text. Choose “From XMP:

Alt Text” field to import alt text from the IPTC Core: Alt Text field of the linked graphic files.

10. Add actual text Add non-printing actual text for graphic elements that aren't recognized as text, but visually appear as text so the screen reader will sound out the graphic’s text instead of alt text. For complex infographics and some maps, create non-printing actual text instead of alt text to allow for tagged paragraph styles, lists, and hyperlinks.

11. Address Large Map Files In some cases, map files are too big and complex to process into a final PDF within the file size limitations. To reduce the file size and maintain good resolution:

export the Illustrator map file to a high-resolution jpg with sharp text and excellent detail. Add the alt text to this file.

In InDesign, duplicate the map layer, and link the new jpg map to a new layer.

named, ‘Map for PDF/UA.’

Change the original layer name to ‘Map for Offset Printing.’

When exporting for an accessible PDF, set the Offset map layer to Do Not Print, Do

Not Show. Lock this layer. Do the reverse when making a PDFX.

12. Set hyperlinks Use the Hyperlinks panel to set all hyperlinks.

13. Prepare Tables Use the Table Styles panel in InDesign to properly tag any tables.

14. Add Bookmarks Add a Bookmark for the visitor information section of each Unigrid.

15. Create Articles Use the Articles panel to set the correct flow of content (images and text) Check “Use for Reading Order in Tagged PDF” and make sure all articles are included.

Credits read after alt text.

16. Final Steps Lock layers Revert View to full page and save.

Export using the PDFX printing preset and check for any issues or inconsistencies with the original PDFX provided.

Preflight using the Accessibility Preflight Profile. (See Define Profiles and Load

Accessibility.idpp file) Combine side one and side two by creating an InDesign Book (indb) file. Name the file with the park alpha code, for example, ZION_UnigridBrochure.indb. Do not combine side one and side two files into a single 2-page InDesign file.

Export to an accessible 2-page PDF.
