About this file
This is a technical specification section for refrigerant piping systems at Mammoth Cave National Park (MACA 258051), establishing requirements for materials, installation, testing, and commissioning of refrigeration and air-conditioning piping infrastructure.
The specification mandates copper Type ACR tubing with wrought-copper fittings joined by brazing or soldering for all suction, hot-gas, and liquid lines. Required components include solenoid valves (AHRI 760 I-P/UL 429 compliant), thermostatic expansion valves (AHRI 750 I-P compliant), check valves, service valves with removable ball-type cores, safety relief valves (ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code compliant), and filter dryers (AHRI 730 I-P compliant) with activated alumina desiccant and 10-micron pleated media. Acceptable refrigerants are R-410A, R-32, or R-454B. Test pressures vary by application: 300 psig for suction lines in refrigeration applications, 535 psig for heat-pump suction lines and hot-gas/liquid lines. Installation requirements include compliance with ASHRAE 15 and ASME B31.5, proper sloping of horizontal piping, oil traps and double risers for vertical runs, protective conduit for belowground installations, and copper-clad hangers for direct contact with copper pipe. Submittals required include product data, delegated design calculations by a qualified professional engineer, shop drawings at 1:4 inch scale, and welding certificates per ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section IX. Field quality control must include pressure testing with nitrogen to specified pressures and leak detection via electronic detection or soap-glycerin solution, followed by system evacuation to 500 micrometers, vacuum hold verification for 12 hours, and charging procedures with new filter-dryer cores.
