About this file
This document is a managed historic landscape maintenance specification for the Historic Pump House and Spring Pond property.
The specification outlines mowing and vegetation management requirements for the site. Mowing operations around the spring pond and Historic Pump House must maintain a standard height of 3 to 5 inches, extending from the road to the north edge of the spring. The perimeter of the spring pond requires mowing to a width of 10 to 12 feet (approximately two mower deck widths), marked by a red outline on the reference map. Mowers must be oriented to direct grass clippings away from the pond, with raking of clippings at the water gate connecting to the Picnic Area and Washington Ranch to minimize debris entering the water. Once annually between November and March, an additional mowing pass extending to the tree line (marked by yellow outline) must be performed to provide ground disturbance that encourages milkweed growth necessary for sustaining monarch butterflies and other species. A critical general restriction prohibits all mowing activities in this zone from mid-June through July 1 to protect state-listed Rio Grande cooters during their migration from the pond to nesting locations.

Historic Pump House and Spring Pond - Managed Historic Landscape
General Restrictions:
• No mowing will take place in this zone from mid-June to July 1, to allow for state-listed Rio
Grande cooter moving from the pond in search of nesting locations.
1. Mow around the spring pond and Historic Pump House.
• Mowers should orient the mower to direct the grass clippings away from the pond. Attempts will be made to reduce the amount of grass clippings entering the pond while trimming by raking out the clippings at the water gate that goes to the Picnic Area and the neighboring Washington Ranch.
• All areas around the pumphouse will be mowed from the road to the north edge of the spring and maintained to standard 3 to 5-inch height. Similarly, the perimeter of the spring pond will be mowed out about 10 to 12 feet or approximately 2 mower decks’ width (within the red outline on map, Fig. 3)
• Once each winter (sometime between November and March), an additional width around the spring pond to the tree line (within the yellow line on map, Fig. 3) will also be mowed. This will provide necessary disturbance to encourage milkweed growth for sustaining monarch butterflies and other
