About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for replacing photovoltaic batteries at the Maze District of Canyonlands National Park. The project requires a contractor to supply, install, and recycle 72 new 2-volt flooded lead acid batteries for an off-grid photovoltaic system that provides electrical service to the headquarters. Key requirements include a minimum of seven years of experience in battery testing or PV installation, specific battery performance characteristics (1,541 amp hours at 20 hours), and a 12-month full replacement warranty with 48 months pro-rated coverage.
The project involves removing existing batteries, transporting them to a certified recycler, and installing new batteries with precise specifications. The work site is located in a remote area of Utah, with challenging access involving 45 miles of dirt road. Contractors must provide detailed safety plans, personal protective equipment, and emergency medical training for crew members. The installation period is 140 calendar days, with a specific 14-day window for battery replacement, and acceptance testing to be conducted 6-9 months after installation. Specialized equipment and careful handling are required due to the technical and safety complexities of battery replacement in this off-grid photovoltaic system.

REPLACE MAZE PHOTOVOLTAIC BATTERIES P a g e | 1
National Park Service Southeast Utah Group Canyonlands National Park
Statement of Work: Supply, Install and Recycle Batteries for Photovoltaic System at MAZE
Delivery Location: Maze District, Canyonlands National Park, Hans Flat, Utah
February 2025
PMIS: 338386
PROJECT SPECIFICATIONS
PART 1 GENERAL
1.1 DESCRIPTION AND REQUIREMENTS
A. Synopsis. Supply, install and recycle batteries for an off grid Photovoltaic (PV) System at Canyonlands National Park. The PV system in conjunction with backup diesel generators provides all electrical service at the headquarters for the Maze District. All 72 of the existing 72 (2 volt nominal) flooded lead acid batteries (Deka 1-M100-27) batteries are to be removed and recycled (approximately 227 pounds each). They are to be replaced with 72 (2 volt nominal) flooded lead acid batteries with a similar amp hour rating, maintenance and watering requirement. The new batteries shall provide a minimum of 1,541 amp hours (at 20 hours) per cell. The work of this contract will include disconnecting, loading, and transporting the existing batteries to a certified recycler. The work will also include delivery, unloading, installation, wiring, and acceptance testing of the new batteries. Attachments include pictures of existing conditions and vicinity map.
B. Qualifications. Due to the technical nature and safety concerns of working with PV batteries, which includes disconnecting and connecting the battery bank and load testing the batteries, the Contractor shall have a minimum of seven years of experience in the field of battery testing or PV experience related to battery installation and maintenance.
The on-site supervisor shall have at least two years of battery testing or PV experience related to battery installation and maintenance. Provide any other information on technical qualifications and training of the installation crew with the required submittal.
C. Delivery Location and Instructions: This remote battery work site is located in Canyonlands National Park, Maze District. To access the Maze District and Hans Flat Ranger Station from Moab go North on 191 for 30 miles and turn West onto Interstate I-
70. Take I-70 west from Green River 11 miles to the Hwy 24/Hanksville exit and drive south towards Hanksville. Approximately 29 miles down Hwy 24 you will see a large brown sign for Goblin Valley State Park which is a turn off to your right. Do not turn there! Approximately 1/2 mile past that turn off is a dirt road on your LEFT which you want to turn on to. There is a wooden sign as you make the turn that says Horseshoe Canyon and Hans Flat Ranger Station etc. so you will know you have the correct road.
Stay on the obvious main road until you reach a Y junction (25 miles) which will have a sign to turn right towards Hans Flat (left to Horseshoe Canyon). Stay on that main road which will take you directly to the Hans Flat Ranger Station. Travel time from Moab to the Maze is 3 hours with good road conditions and no trailer, the last 45 miles are on dirt road.
