Looking Ahead On Line
General Bridge Description:
Cottonwood Campground Trail Bridge- Site 1 is located within the Cottonwood Campground on the access trail to Campsite #1. Abutment 1 is located on the right side looking downstream and Abutment 2 is on the left.
There is no separate wearing surface for this bridge. The traffic bears directly on the deck planks. There are 15– 3x12” Transverse deck planks. The railing consists of 4” to 6” diameter timber logs that are used for the rails and posts. Each beam consists of a pair of 3x12” members, on edge, back-to-back, one pair on each side of the deck spaced at 3’-9½”, center-to-center.
The bearing devices consist of two 6x6” treated sills on top of the concrete abutment at Abutment 2 and one 6x6” treated sill on top of the concrete abutment at Abutment 1. The concrete abutments were set on a native foundation consisting of a combination of soil and cobbles. The backwall consists of rock and mortar at Abutment 1 and timber at Abutment 2.
The wingwalls consist of sawn timber members at three locations and rock and mortar at the other location.

CRITICAL FINDINGS
Were any Critical Findings identified?: No If Yes, provide detailed explanation:
FOLLOW-UP PLAN
If a Critical Finding was identified, what is the recommended Follow-Up Plan?:
STRUCTURE EVALUATION SUMMARY
The structure is in fair overall condition. No repairs or maintenance needs were identified at this time except to periodically clean the soil and debris from the top faces of the stringers between the deck planks.
The NOC provides bridge inspection services upon request for bridges under the jurisdiction of the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The bridge inspections services provided are in compliance with the National Bridge Inspection Standards (NBIS). As a minimum, any BLM owned, public vehicular structures having an overall length of 20 feet or greater should be inspected in accordance with the NBIS. Tunnels, trail bridges, major culverts and other significant structures may be inspected upon request.

FIELD INSPECTION REPORT
CONDITION RATING CODES FOR ITEMS 58 - 62
N NOT APPLICABLE
9 EXCELLENT CONDITION
8 VERY GOOD CONDITION - no problems noted.
7 GOOD CONDITION - some minor problems.
6 SATISFACTORY CONDITION - structural elements show some minor deterioration.
5 FAIR CONDITION - all primary structural elements are sound but may have minor section loss, cracking, spalling, or scour.
4 POOR CONDITION - advanced section loss, deterioration, spalling, or scour.
3 SERIOUS CONDITION - loss of section, deterioration, spalling, or scour have seriously affected primary structural components. Local failures are possible.
Fatigue cracks in steel or shear cracks in concrete may be present.
2 CRITICAL CONDITION - advanced deterioration of primary structural elements.
Fatigue cracks in steel or shear cracks in concrete may be present or scour may have removed substructure support. Unless closely monitored it may be necessary to close the structure until corrective action can be taken.
1 IMMINENT FAILURE CONDITION - major deterioration or section loss present in critical structural components or obvious vertical or horizontal movement affecting structure stability. Structure is closed to traffic but corrective action may return structure to light service.
0 FAILED CONDITION - out of service; beyond corrective action.

58 Deck Condition 6 – Satisfactory
1. DECK SLAB G Notes (w/item reference):
58.1‐ Some checks and normal weathering in the timber deck. No decay was found.
58.6‐ The railing has some splits and checks but no soft wood was found. The downstream railing is loose. The post spacing is 15 ft. which is inadequate for horizontal loads.

1. BEARING DEVICES F Notes (w/item reference):
59.1 – The timber sill beams at A2 are uneven which creates an uneven bearing surface for the girders.
59.2 – Some soft wood was found at the top faces between the deck planks where soil accumulates, primarily on the u/s beam.
59.7‐ The paint on the exterior faces of the stringers is in fair condition. The paint on the ends of the deck planks is in poor condition. The paint on the deck members is essentially gone.

Abutments Notes (w/item reference):
60.3 – The concrete bearing seat is uneven at A2 which creates an uneven bearing seat for the timber sill beam and the timber girders.
60.6 – The mortar and rock wingwall on the d/s side of A2 is in good condition.

ADDITIONAL PHOTOGRAPHS
Caption 1: Elevation view looking u/s. Caption 2: The concrete cap at A2 is uneven which creates point loads on the timber sill beam. No deficiencies were found due to the uneven loading.
Caption 3: Looking at the timber sill beam at A1. There is heavy debris accumulation at A1. The approach to A1 is downhill which increases the amount of soil that gets deposited at A1.
Caption 4: Minor scour was found at the u/s corner of A1.
