Attachment 0012 Q&A #2

1) Specifications call for lime to be mixed with soil. What is the soil classification to be mixed with lime. If the material is zone 1 or zone 1a does the contractor receive payment for the zoned material used in the lime compacted material?

A: Item 8 - Lime Amended Embankment includes providing the soil from excavation stockpiles or borrow areas. The Lime Amended Embankment quantity is in addition to the Zone 1 and Zone 1a quantities and is paid in accordance with Section 011150 Measurement and Payment.

2) Specification section 3.05 states:

The CONTRACTOR shall prepare, mix, and cure the lime treated soil in the area shown on the drawings or as directed by the GOVERNMENT. Before lime treatment operations start, The processing area used for mixing and curing shall be stripped of topsoil. After the area is no longer required for mixing and curing, it shall be regraded as needed, disked to a depth of 4 inches, and covered uniformly with the removed topsoil. We cannot find this designated processing area in the plans. Please clarify where the processing area is located.

A: The processing area will be proposed by the Contractor as indicated in the submittal information described in SECTION 02300, Paragraph 1.03 E.

“Lime Treatment Plan

1. Describe means and methods for applying lime at specified rate, mixing soil and lime, and moisture control. Include descriptions of proposed equipment to be used in the lime treatment, and location of the processing area.

2. Detail the means and methods proposed for the sealing the lime treated area.”

3) Is the intent to Lime treat a borrow material in a government designated area on site and leave it laid out in a horizontal lift while curing for 7 days? To be able to process all the material at once and cure it in a single lift, it would take approximately 6 acres as you would have to alternate row placements to allow the water truck to access all material. If the material is stockpiled you cannot re process with the rotary pulverizing or disk equipment.

A: After the initial mixing of a lift with disk or rotary equipment is complete, it is acceptable to move that lime treated soil from the mixing area to a stockpile for curing.

4) Can the lime processed material be stockpiled after processing and continually mixed and water treated with a front end loader and water truck?

A: It is acceptable to stockpile the lime treated soil and water and remix the stockpile with equipment other than disks or rotary mixers as needed during the curing period.

5) Are any contractor furnished offices/facilities for government use required as part of this contract? If so, what are the size and capability requirements for these items?

A: NO contractor furnished offices/facilities for government use are required as part of this contract.
