About this file

This is a specification document for aluminum handrails and guardrails installation under Division 5, Section 05300 of the construction specifications. The work requires a fully engineered, fabricated, and installed aluminum guardrail system to be fascia-mounted to a second-story exterior deck at the MN Fergus Falls Wildlife Management District facility, including selective demolition and removal of the existing exterior second-level deck handrailing and steel staircase. The system must include posts, rails, ornamental pickets/infill, fascia-mount brackets, fasteners, anchorage, and powder-coated finish, with all work complying with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.23, ANSI A1264.1, and the 2021 IBC Code.

The contractor must engage a Registered Structural Engineer to design the complete guardrail system with sealed calculations and shop drawings. The system must meet specific performance requirements: handrails designed for 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point, guardrails rated for 200 pounds per linear foot horizontally at the top rail and 50 pounds per square foot on infill, with a minimum guard height of 43 inches and compliance with ADA accessibility guidelines. Materials specified include aluminum alloy 6005A-T65 construction with Type 316 stainless steel fasteners, and AAMA 2604 high-performance powder-coat finish with a 5-year warranty. The contractor's manufacturer must demonstrate minimum five years of documented experience, maintain engineering staff capable of project-specific design, and operate their own fabrication facility with direct quality control. All fabrication must be completed in the shop with field welding prohibited, and the contractor must conduct a pre-installation conference with USFWS Refuge personnel before beginning installation work.

· Work includes selective demolition and removal of the existing exterior second‑level deck handrailing and steel staircase.

· Work includes protection of adjacent structures, restoration of affected surfaces, disposal of removed materials, and required documentation.

· Comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.23 – Guarding floor and wall openings and ANSI A1264.1, Safety Requirements for Workplace Floor and Wall Openings, Stairs, and Railing Systems.

· Follow local building codes, latest adopted edition.

1.2 DELEGATED DESIGN

· Engage a Registered Structural Engineer to design the complete guardrail system (posts, rails, infill, brackets, and fascia mounted anchorage to the supporting deck structure) including connections and fasteners. Submit sealed calculations and shop drawings demonstrating compliance with the 2021 IBC Code.

1.3 PERFORMANCE / LOADING REQUIREMENTS

· Handrails and Guardrails: Comply with loads in accordance with IBC 2021 and ASCE 7-22.

· Handrails: 200 pounds applied in any direction at any point along the handrail.

· Guardrails: 200 pounds per linear foot applied horizontally at top rail, and 50 pounds per square foot applied to infill.

· Guard Height: 42 inch minimum for nonresidential structures (per IBC) Drawings show 43” for safety factor.

· ADA Compliance: Handrail gripping surface shall comply with ADA accessibility guidelines.

· Opening / Climb Ability: No opening shall allow passage of a 4-inch sphere.

· Materials / Finish / Durability: Powder-coating to meet AAMA 2604.

1.4 SUBMITTALS

· Submit shop drawings for fabrication and installation of handrails to include plans, elevations, sections, details at posts, corners, terminations, bracket plate geometry, fasteners, interface with deck fascia, outline of backing/ blocking requirements and any necessary accessory items.

· Sealed Structural Calculations: Demonstrate that handrail design meets all loading and geometric code requirements.

· Selection Samples: Two complete sets of color charts representing manufacturer’s full range of available colors and finishes.

· Load Tests: Submit test results from ASTM E935 conducted on the manufacturer’s supplied system indicating compliance with required structural loading.

· Samples: 12-inch length of top rail and picket with approved powder coat color and finish.

· Finish Certificates: Powder-coat applicator certification for AAMA 2604.

1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE

· Manufacturer’s Qualifications: Minimum 5-years documented experience in design, fabrication, and installation of aluminum systems specified in this section.

· Contractor’s manufacturer shall maintain engineering staff capable of producing project specific designs and calculations.

· Contractor’s manufacturer shall operate their own fabrication facility with direct control over quality.

1.6 FABRICATION

· Shop Assembly: Assemble components in shop to greatest extent possible to minimize field assembly.

· Welding: In accordance with AWS D1.2 (aluminum). Make welds smooth and uniform. Perform suitable edge penetration to assure 100% penetration.
