• Largest irrigation project in the Yakima River Basin

• BIA performs operations and maintenance

• Provides irrigation water to approximately 140,000 acres of farmland

• Estimated crop value of $458M-560M (2013)

• Construction from 1905-1948

Drop 1 Pumping Plant:

Facility Overview

• Integral part of Wapato Irrigation Project (WIP)

• Lifts water from Main Canal 90 feet into the East and West Highline Canals

• Has three 725 hp hydraulic turbine pumps with original combined pumping capacity of 163 cfs

• Has four supplemental electric 200 hp pumps each designed to convey 13 cfs

Project Purpose

• Improve safety by:

• Removing manual screen cleaning

• Adding fall protection

• Adding safety boom

• Increasing site lighting

• Improve operability by automating controls and processes

Project Scope

• New traveling water screens on six bays that combine into 3 hydraulic pump chambers, plus one spare traveling water screen

• Fabricated steel structure appended onto existing concrete piers to support traveling water screens, including concrete build up

• Debris conveyance system from new traveling water screens

• New gate actuators, pedestals, stems, and automation system

• Fall arrest system

• Lighting

• Telecommunications line for auto dialer connectivity
