About this file
This document provides responses to questions regarding Amendment 05 to Solicitation 1333ND23QNB680268. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) requires a contractor to replace the Thermal Column Tank (TCT) at its Gaithersburg, Maryland campus. The TCT is part of NIST's 20 MW Test Reactor and weighs approximately 2,500 pounds. It has a lead bismuth shield weighing around 7,500 pounds. The thermal flux across the tank ranges from 4.6E13 to 4.6E6 neutrons cm^-2s^-1. The reactor was defueled for dose rate measurements, though internal supports still contribute to dose rates near the TCT. NIST can support occasional extended work hours if necessary to complete machining. A plan view shows remaining obstructions to the east and west of the TCT tunnel will be removed to facilitate the replacement work.

Amendment 05 to Solicitation# 1333ND23QNB680268 July 11, 2023
The purpose of this amendment is to provide a consolidated list of questions and answers:
1. Were the dose rates reported in answer #46 with the fuel in the core, or was the vessel de-fueled when these measurements were made?
RESPONSE: Vessel was defueled
2. If the reactor was defueled, were the core internal supports in-place and contributing to the dose rates in the vicinity of the TCT?
RESPONSE: Internal supports contribute to the dose rate.
3. If the reactor was not defueled for the dose rates in answer #46, is there an estimated dose rate reduction for the defueled condition at the same locations?
RESPONSE: Reactor was defueled
4. Please provide data suitable to assess activation of the TCT (e.g., surveys, reactor flux production) to support shield design for storage &/or shipment.
RESPONSE:
The thermal column is made up with 5052 aluminum and weight approximately 2,500 lbs Part of the thermal column complex is a lead bismuth shield. This shield assembly weighs approximately 7,500 lbs.
The thermal flux seen across the tank ranges from approx. 4.6E13 neutrons cm^-2s^-1 at the face of the reactor and as low as 4.6E6 neutrons cm^-2s^-1.
5. Can NIST support occasional extended shift hours in the event a machining process cannot be completed when the shift ends?
RESPONSE: Yes
6. It is understood that the platform over the TCT tunnel will be removed, can a basic outline of remaining obstructions to the East and West of the TCT Tunnel be provided?
RESPONSE: Below is a Plan View of what the area will look like:
