About this file

This solicitation seeks maintenance and repair services for cooling towers at the National Institute of Standards and Technology Center for Neutron Research. The scope includes routine maintenance, cleaning, and repairs for two sets of cooling towers that cool the reactor's secondary cooling water. One tower is a 2002 structure with three cells, the other is a 2011 modular tower with two cells. Services are also required for related subsystems like a deicing system, fire protection system, and plume abatement system. The aging right-angle gear drives in cells 1-4 need special attention. The objective is to inspect, clean, perform maintenance, and complete any necessary repairs on the cooling towers and connected subsystems to support continued operations at the Center for Neutron Research reactor facility. The Department of Commerce National Institute of Standards and Technology is the contracting agency.

Opening Comment During today's visit the following services were performed:

All wet chemistry tests were performed on the make-up water and cooling water.

Adjustments were made where necessary.

Recommendations for improvements were discussed with the operators.

Make-up Water Online The conductivity is down to approximately 450 this week, but it is still higher than normal and is decreasing our cycles of concentration which increases water and chemical use.

Cooling Tower Online All tested parameters are within the control limits.

Based on the current Calcium, phosphate and alkalinity levels in the tower water we can increase the conductivity set point to 1750uS. This will get our cycles up without to account for the increase in make-up water conductivity. The goal is to keep cycles between 4 and 6 where cycles = (tower conductivity/make-up water conductivity).

This will also reduce chemical and water usage.
