About this file

This document is an amendment to a federal contract that adds insurance coverage requirements through two clauses: CAR 1352.228-70 and FAR 52.228-5.

CAR 1352.228-70 establishes mandatory insurance coverage requirements including workers' compensation with employer's liability coverage of at least $100,000; general liability bodily injury insurance of at least $500,000 per occurrence; automobile liability insurance providing at least $200,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence for bodily injury, plus $20,000 per occurrence for property damage; aircraft public and passenger liability insurance of at least $200,000 per person and $500,000 per occurrence for bodily injury and $200,000 per occurrence for property damage when aircraft are used; and vessel collision and protection and indemnity liability insurance as determined by the Government when vessels are involved in contract performance. FAR 52.228-5 requires contractors to obtain and maintain the specified insurance at their own expense before commencing work, notify the Contracting Officer in writing of insurance procurement, and ensure all policies contain endorsements preventing cancellation or material changes from taking effect without providing 30 days' written notice to the Contracting Officer or compliance with applicable state law, whichever period is longer. The contractor must also insert these insurance requirements into subcontracts involving work on Government installations and maintain copies of all subcontractors' proofs of required insurance for Contracting Officer review upon request.
