SECTION C – DESCRIPTION/SPECIFICATION/STATEMENT OF WORK
1.0 BACKGROUND
1.0.1 NATIONAL FORESTS AND GRASSLANDS
The Forest Service a multi-faceted agency that is part of the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) that manages and protects 154 national forests and 20 grasslands in 43 states and Puerto Rico. The agency’s mission is to sustain the health, diversity, and productivity of the nation’s forests and grasslands to meet the needs of present and future generations.
The Forest Service has an elite wildland firefighting team and the world’s largest forestry research organization with experts that provide technical and financial help to state and local government agencies, businesses, private landowners and work government-to-government with tribes to help protect and manage non-federal forest and associated range and watershed lands.
The work may be augmented through partnerships with public and private agencies that help us plant trees, improve trails, educate the public, and improve conditions in wildland/urban interfaces and rural areas, just to name a few. The Forest Service also promotes sustainable forest management and biodiversity conservation internationally.
The Rocky Mountain Region (Region 2) of the U.S. Forest Service includes eleven national forests and grasslands in Colorado, Wyoming, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Kansas. The ecological and biological diversity on these lands is amazing: ranging from the many peaks above 14,000 feet in elevation down from alpine tundra, through coniferous and aspen forests, to pinyon-juniper and sagebrush, or expansive grasslands as low as 2,500 feet. The ID/IQ’s only will incorporate locations in Nebraska, South Dakota and parts on Wyoming only.
