Questions and Answers Document
Long Bell Barracks and Fire Office Repair (127EAW21Q0007)
Version 1: 04/20//2021
General Q1: Will there be access to power/generator or will we need to provide our own power source?
A1: A portable source(s) is recommended. The Forest Service can make power available; the contractor will be responsible to manage and turn off and on the station generator each day if needed.
Q2: Can the contractor stay on site during construction?
A2: Yes, outside. A trailer pad w/sewer connection can be made available if the station is unoccupied with firefighters.
Q3: Staging area?
A3: There is ample space to stage supplies around the station during the work window outside the main firefighting season.
Q4: Restroom facilities?
A4: See A2 above for staying on site. If unoccupied with firefighters, on-site restrooms can be used. Otherwise the contractor shall provide a portable unit for their employees to avoid sharing restrooms.
Barracks Deck Q5: Do you want boot cleaning grates in front of the barracks doors as there are now?
A5: Yes
Q6: Do you want a bench on the large deck like now?
A6: Yes
Q7: Do you want to stay with a 36” rail height or would you like to increase it to 42” (as per code requirements)?
A7: 42 inches
Q8: Can we reuse the deck piers?
A8: Yes – if suitable the piers can be re-used. If not, pour-in-place are required.
Q9: Free-standing or attached structure?
A9: Attached to building preferred.
Q10: Hand railings down to ground, or end with deck as is now?
A10: End with deck.
Office Roof Q11: Do you want fascia added to the sides of the fire office or left as is?
A11: Left as is would be fine.
Q12: Do you want gutters?
A12: No.
Q13: Does the chimney need to be removed under the roofline?
A13: No, just adequately sealed off.
Q14: High-ribbed roofing, or standing seam?
A14: Screwless or hidden-fastener high-rib style metal, to match the existing barracks roof.
Barracks Siding Q15: Is HardiePlank type siding what you want?
A15: Yes, HardiePlank type siding is what we want. The Forest Service is open to other brand options equal to or better than.
Q16: Does the siding need to be painted?
A16: Yes, the final product must match the surrounding buildings.
Q17: Should the shutter brackets be retained? Should they be repaired if needed?
A17: Yes.
Q18: Do the concrete landings need repair?
A18: This is not part of the original scope of work. An optional bid for these kinds of non-required improvements may be considered for award.
Q19: Do the windows need to be replaced?
A19: No. An optional bid for these kinds of non-required improvements may be considered for award.
Office Flooring Q20: Is there heat/heaters available in the office for flooring installation?
A20: Yes.
Q21: What is included in the scope of work for rodent proofing and crawl space work?
A21: Any work necessary to prevent entry of rodents. This includes improving the security and sealing off the exterior crawl space entry/foundation as well as interior. Problem areas include near the shower and behind the toilet.
Q22: The specifications are for glued down laminate flooring; would you prefer floating?
A22: Yes, floating plank flooring is preferred.
Q23: Structural work involved with the flooring?
A23: Yes, any needed structural repairs shall be included prior to re-flooring.
