About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for a roof replacement solicitation issued by the Custer Gallatin National Forest (Solicitation 1240LU26Q0034), dated February 24, 2026 and updated March 2, 2026. The project involves replacing roofs on two historic cabins: Battle Ridge Cabin (approximately 588 square feet building footprint) and Ibex Cabin (approximately 500 square feet building footprint).
The document addresses contractor inquiries regarding project specifications and logistics. Key requirements include the mandatory use of Western Red Cedar No. 1 Grade shingles as specified in the solicitation documents to comply with historic preservation requirements; synthetic shake roofing alternatives are not acceptable. Contractors must verify actual roof measurements in the field prior to ordering materials, as the provided measurements are approximate for bidding purposes only. The government does not have additional blueprints or dimensioned plans available. Regarding site access, the cabins are accessible via self-guided visits with directions provided in attachments; however, contractors should be aware of winter conditions that may require snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or hiking, and note that cabins may be occupied due to active reservations. For shingle specifications beyond the No. 1 Grade requirement, contractors must reference Section 073129 2.1 Wood Shingles and Figure 11, which provides an example of an acceptable shingle label. The document does not specify response deadlines, award dates, or pricing terms.

Submitted questions and answers:
1. Q: I wanted to check with you to see whether your team would be open to considering a synthetic shake roofing option. A: The government is required to utilize the shingles specified in the documents in order to meet historic preservation requirements.
2. Q: I am reaching out to see if we can schedule someone from our team to visit the cabins next Tuesday or Wednesday for a site visit. A: We are not scheduling any specific site visits but you are welcome to go look at them on your own. Be aware that there are winter conditions and you may have to snowshoe, snowmobile or hike into the cabins at this time. Also, they are open for reservations and so there may be people occupying the cabins.
3. Q: Could you please provide directions or confirm if there are clear signs to help us navigate to the Ibex and Battle Ridge cabins? Additionally, how many miles are the cabins from the nearest parking zone if the sites are not accessible by vehicle? A:
See attachments below for directions. There are signs in place for each cabin.
4. Q: I wanted to ask if there are any available drawings, blueprints, or dimensioned plans for the cabins that you could share. A: The government does not have additional plans/blueprints to provide. B-2 Notes (page 2, Attachment 2) includes the following:
Roof measurements are approximate for bidding purposes. Actual measurements to be field verified by Contractor prior to ordering materials and starting work.
Battle Ridge Cabin building footprint (not roof area) is approximately 588 square feet; Ibex Cabin footprint is approximately 500 square feet.
