About this file
This document contains an amendment to a solicitation for a roof replacement project at the Mendenhall Glacier Visitor Center. Key details include:
The project requires the demolition and removal of the existing roof assembly down to the structural deck, installation of a temporary roofing system, installation of a PVC membrane roof assembly with insulation and accessories, parapet work including building up a step and adding flashing and spray foam, installation of an additional roof drain with associated plumbing, and miscellaneous other work. An optional item is included for installation of a roof ice melt system at all roof drains, overflows, and associated electrical work. The amendment addresses pre-bid inquiries related to COVID-19 requirements, extending the crane schedule through mid-May with restrictions, and provides photos clarifying aspects of the project. Notes on the drawings were also clarified.

Question: What are the covid requirements for this project? For both the General Contractor and any sub work.
Answer: At this time there is an injunction for the executive order issued for COVID protocols pertaining to federal contractors. So, there is currently not a requirement to have vaccinations, etc. However, please plan for normal precautions issued by the CDC. If necessary, any chaanges will be addressed before award.
PBI-006
Question: Is it possible to extend the date we can have the crane there for removal and bringing in new material? Possibly through May?
Answer: : It may be possible to extend having the crane on site through May 15th, 2022. However, the entire month of May will likely be the beginning of a very busy tourist season at the site. Operations would need to be restricted to occur on either no cruise ship days or in the off times of day.
Please see https://secureservercdn.net/198.71.233.189/2xl.54d.myftpupload.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/12/JNU-Juneau-2022.pdf for the cruise ship schedule that will need to be accommodated for pedestrian traffic. I would say operations would be allowed to occur between 8pm – 7:30am beginning on May 2nd – May 15th. For May 3 – 6 and May 8-9th, the morning hours could be extended from 7:30pm to 8:00 pm, but there will still be some local/non-cruise ship visitors during that time. We would need to have pedestrian traffic control if crane operations are held when visitation is occurring and will be the contractor’s responsibility to protect the public from construction hazards. Crane operations could likely be extended if needed but would again need to occur when there are no cruise ships docked which gets harder as the season progresses. We can discuss this on a case-by-case basis as needed.

Question: We are wondering the distance from the walkway at the back of the building to the roof? We were thinking of possibly making a temporary bridge to easier access the roof from the path. I see in the plans it has +-20 feet distance to one part of the path, not sure if we can shorten that up and/or temporarily remove a railing section for better access to bring in materials.
Answer: Attached are photos of the pathway and the backside of the building. +/-20 feet is a good estimate for this area. The handrails are grouted into place so it may be difficult to remove them unless they are cut and rewelded which is probably not ideal. Amendment 2, Attachment 1
PBI-008
Question: Please provide photos for the following areas: General Roof photos of where there may be problem areas, close ups of the stone parapets, The area that needs the parapet build up, The rough location of where the new roof drain is supposed to be installed, run through the building, any access panels if it runs in the ceiling and the location of where the pipe will run along the wall where the new chase is going to be built and Gap between the back of the building and the path.
Answer: Photos are attached. Amemdment 2, Attachment 1

Question: There are two different notes on sheet A201 referencing separate details on the plans, the curved parapet (Note 3, detail3/A801) and all the other parapets are (Note 2, detail 4/A801). Each one references a different detail on sheet A801. The details look very similar. What is the difference is between them? Is the curved parapet being replaced?
Answer: The main difference between Detail 3 and Detail 4 on sheet A801 is the existing structure. The existing trim to remain is detailed a little differently and the existing roof and wall structure is a bit different as well. The intent is to replace the metal parapet cap to match the existing radius per detail 4.
PBI 010
Question: On Sheet A203, 12 of 17, general note 3 regarding Valin Corporation phone number provided for the ice melt system is no longer in service.
Answer: 800-774-5630 Valin Corporation https://www.valin.com/engineered-solutions/heat-trace-solutions.
Requests for Information (RFI’s) for Plans and Specifications
Drawing updates:
Note 2 on sheet 8 of 17, A201, is in reference to all the parapets (not just the perimeter) minus the observatory curved roof (Note 3) and the concrete parapet (Note 4).
Sheet A201, 8 of 17, Note 4 is incorrectly called out. There is no metal flashing to cover the concrete parapet as shown on 2/A801.
