About this file

This is a Statement of Work for the repair and maintenance of a Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) – FEI Tecnai 12, Serial Number D328 – located at the USDA-ARS Western Regional Research Center in Albany, California. The TEM requires comprehensive repairs to address a blown LaB6 filament, problematic restart procedures, and unreliable vacuum gauge readings, along with repositioning of the water cooling rack and reattachment of removed back covers.

The contractor must provide and install specific replacement parts and perform detailed maintenance tasks within 90 days of award. Required parts include a CCB DAB board with BNC connector, a 5V/30A power supply, a LaB6 filament with Denka emitter, diffusion pump oil and O-rings, rotary pump oil, two 22V batteries, condenser apertures in multiple sizes, and potentially new vacuum gauges (Active Penning NW25 and PPci NW16 models). Work scope includes preventative maintenance consisting of oil changes in both diffusion and rotary pumps, battery replacement, electron beam and column alignment, aperture alignment and cleaning, camera functionality verification, and column contamination elimination through vacuum cryo cycles. The contractor must also check and clean or replace vacuum gauges, reposition the water rack for improved accessibility, reattach TEM back covers, verify resolution using a TEM standard, and provide photographic documentation of resolution capability. Travel to and from the service location in Albany, California is included as a contract requirement.

Statement of Work Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) Repair

Page 1 of 2 TEM REPAIR | SOW

1. Background Transmission electron microscope (TEM) – FEI Tecnai 12, SN D328.

• The LaB6 (lanthanum hexaboride) filament in the TEM blew out

• Restarting TEM after shutting down is problematic requiring pulling out and reseating a board in the back of the TEM

• Vacuum gauge doesn’t always read properly

• Water rack is positioned such that it’s difficult to reach the back of the TEM

• The covers have been removed from the back of the TEM

2. Requirements/Tasks

• Provide and replace a CCB DAB board o Requires a CCB DAB with a BNC connector (part number 4022 268

00198). This part ensures communication between the computer and the TEM hardware/software.

• Check computer and TEM communication to ensure a smooth startup o Requires a 5V/30A power supply (part number 4022 268 02210).

• Provide and replace a burn out filament o Requires a LaB6 filament with a LaB6 Denka emitter filament (part number 9432 909 96101)

• Perform preventative maintenance on the TEM. Shall include and will require:

o Change oil in the diffusion pump requires oil diffusion pump (ODP) oil (part number 5322 390 80037) o Replace O-rings in the diffusion pump, ODP O rings (part number 5322 530 51165) o Change oil in the rotary pump requires PVP oil (part number 5322 390 10135) o Replace two (2) 22 V batteries (part number 5322 138 10075) o Align the electron beam. Requires adjustment on the TEM/computer interface.

o Align the column o Clean or replace aperture sets. May require condenser apertures 150 µm

(part number 9432 061 24001), 100 µm (part number 9432 061 08001), and 50 µm (part number 9432 061 09001).

o Align apertures – requires adjustment on the TEM column o Ensure proper function of camera

• Eliminate Column Contamination by running the vacuum with cryo cycles and checking vacuum over time to clean TEM column of debris, dust, contamination and oil.

• Reattach TEM back covers

• Check resolution. Requires a TEM standard on a TEM grid and a photograph of the grid at high magnification to demonstrate resolution.

• Check/clean or replace the vacuum gauges so that the vacuum is reliable. If new gauges are needed, provide part CCGp Active Penning NW25 (part number 4022 268 00114) and vacuum gauge, and PPci NW16 (part number 4022 268 00108).

• Reposition water rack so that it’s more convenient for user.
