Selected RAD Projects from 2016 and 2017 Title Description
CCBI Development Continued development and maintenance of the CEAP Conservation Benefits Identifier (CCBI) which compares the history of conservation practices applied to inherent soil vulnerability to estimate and prioritize future treatment needs. This includes the development of the “circle proxy” method of analysis which allows groups of conservation practices that occur on the same field to be treated as a cohesive unit to assess conservation benefits obtained. CCBI derived data has been developed for the entire nation, more detailed CCBI based analyses have been conducted for specific regions such as the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and the Western Lake Erie Basin.
Western Lake Erie Basin (WLEB) Analysis Combine the CCBI based analysis mentioned above with other data sources on water quality and wildlife conservation needs for a holistic view of conservation benefits and future needs for the WLEB region.
Soil Vulnerability Index for Cultivated Cropland Continued development of the Soil Vulnerability Index for Cultivated Cropland. This includes comprehensive metadata, user guide, and ArcGIS web application for state-level review.
CCBI NWQI Planning Tool Update data previously developed in support of the National Water Quality Initiative and further develop a comprehensive “Planning Tool”. The planning tool provides a comprehensive Excel workbook for each of the 48 states in the continental U.S. and each initiative area comprising sheets for Leaching, Runoff, and Listed Waters. The workbooks provide statistical tools and drop down buttons to allow focusing on watersheds within each state or initiative area that require the most work based on a variety of different measures such as the effective targeting index and the high priority acres remaining to be treated.
Chesapeake Bay Executive Order Annual update of detailed conservation information to support the Chesapeake Bay Executive Order. This includes an ArcGIS web application to track the watersheds treated, remaining to be treated, and where treatment is planned.
Analysis of Pennsylvania Remote Sensing Data Cooperation with the Pennsylvania State office to incorporate remote sensing data into the CCBI-HLS model for this state.
Great Lakes Region Initiative Phosphorus Reduction Project Developed the “Proximity Join” algorithm that facilitates combining NPAD conservation practice data with ProTracts data. This algorithm uses the location and relative sizes of areas treated to combine the data and thus provide EPA with phosphorus reduction achieved by the combined application of conservation practices.
Update NRI Reports for the RCA Website Update the 427 National Resources Inventory (NRI) reports on the Resources Conservation Act (RCA) website to utilize data from the 2012 NRI.
Update Conservation Program Reports for the RCA Website An annual project to update the 77 conservation program reports on the RCA website with the latest fiscal years data.
Support for the RCA Appraisal Update Analysis and graphics support for the forthcoming RCA Appraisal. The last appraisal was published in 2011, the new appraisal not only updates the graphics from the previous one but will contain dozens of newly produced maps and charts showing the state of natural resource conditions for the nation.
RI Rangeland Report Graphics and website support for the forthcoming NRI Rangeland Report summarizing the results of the 2015 On-Site Rangeland Sample including 99 new maps.
Public Lands Grazing Analysis An analysis of conservation practices on Federal and State owned lands conducted in support of the CEAP Grazing Lands Component. Results found that 1% of conservation practices applied and 14% of acres treated occurred on non-private lands.

Selected RAD Projects from 2016 and 2017 Title Description
Analysis of Developed Land in Coastal Counties Analysis of net changes and percent changes in developed land in coastal counties of the U.S. using the 2012 National Resources Inventory. The analysis included details on previous agricultural land uses and previous wetland types before conversion to developed land.
Analysis of Erosion on Cropland Comprehensive analysis of water erosion by major crops: barley, corn, cotton, peanuts, potatoes, rice, soybeans, sugar beets and wheat. The estimates were provided for the nation and by state using the 2012 National Resources Inventory.
Annual Update of the ESD and FSG Tables A set of comprehensive tables for NRI Rangeland Ecological Site Date (ESD) and Forage Suitability Group (FSG) are updated annually. This program dynamically generates over five thousand workbooks for the ESD update and several thousand for the FSG update.
