SUBJECT: NON-MEDICAL COUNSELING INFORMATION
DATE: 08/08/23
REFERENCES: DODI 6490.06 Counseling Services for DoD Military, Guard and Reserve, Certain Affiliated Personnel and Their Family Members
PURPOSE: To provide information and understanding on Non-medical Counseling for the Military OneSource Program.
POLICY: Military OneSource provides confidential, non-medical, short-term counseling to members of the active force, the National Guard and Reserves, their families, and certain affiliated personnel up to 12 sessions per person, per issue at no cost.
BACKGROUND: Non-medical counseling programs provide confidential, short-term counseling to members of the active force, the National Guard and Reserves, their families, and certain affiliated personnel up to 12 sessions per person, per issue at no cost. Non-medical counseling programs are centrally managed in the Office of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy (ODASD (MC&FP)).
PROCEDURE:
1. Non-medical counseling offered through Military OneSource and Military and Family Life Counseling are centrally managed in the Office of Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Military Community and Family Policy (ODASD (MC&FP)), under Military Community Support Programs.
2. Non-medical counseling through Military OneSource is offered worldwide to eligible participants 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year through the website, www.militaryonesource.mil or 800-342-9647 (international telephone numbers are also located on the website).
3. Non-medical counselors possess a master’s or doctorate degree in a mental health field and are licensed or certified in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia to practice independently.
4. Non-medical counselors are mandated reporters of situations that include harm to self or others, domestic violence, child abuse or neglect, violence against any person, and any present or future illegal activity.
5. Non-medical counseling provides support for common military related stressors to prevent the development or exacerbation of mental health conditions that may detract from military and family readiness.
6. Non-medical counseling is offered through the following modalities:
a. Face-to-Face: A traditional 50-minute counseling session in an office setting with a provider located within the community.
b. Telephonic and Online: A traditional 50-minute counseling session available telephonically or online.
EXECEPTION: There are no exceptions to this policy without Government Military OneSource Program Office written approval.
