The procedures for preparing the Thunderbird Vessel were created using basic standards for preparing metal substrates from Society for Protective Coatings (SSPC) and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers International (NACE).

Commercial Blast Cleaning SSPC-SP6/NACE 3; ISO 8501-1 Sa 2 A Commercial Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter, except for staining. Staining shall be limited to no more than 33% of each square inch of surface area and may consist of light shadows, slight streaks or minor discoloration caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale or stains of previously applied paint. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods.

Brush-Off Blast Cleaning SSPC-SP7/NACE 4; ISO 8501-1 Sa 1 A Brush-Off Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, loose mill scale, loose rust, and loose paint. Tightly adherent mill scale, rust and paint may remain on the surface. Mill scale, rust and coating are considered adherent if they cannot be removed by lifting with a dull putty knife after abrasive blast cleaning has been performed. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods.

Near-White Blast Cleaning SSPC-SP10/NACE 2; ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5

A Near-White Blast Cleaned surface, when viewed without magnification, shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products and other foreign matter, except for staining. Staining shall be limited to no more than 5 percent of each square inch of surface area and may consist of light shadows, slight streaks or minor discoloration caused by stains of rust, stains of mill scale or stains of previously applied paint. Before blast cleaning, visible deposits of oil or grease shall be removed by any of the methods specified in

SSPC-SP1 or other agreed upon methods. For complete instructions, refer to Joint Surface

Preparation Standard SSPC-SP10/NACE 2 or ISO 8501-1 Sa 2.5

Pressure Washing Pressure washer shall not exceed 4000 Psi with Flat tips only NO Rotary Tip light cleaning. Any residual material shall be tightly adhered to the metal substrate and may consist of randomly dispersed stains of rust and other corrosion products or previously applied coating, tightly adherent thin coatings, And other tightly adherent foreign matter.

SSPC-SP1 Solvent Cleaning Removal of all visible oil, grease, soil, drawing and cutting compounds, and other soluble contaminants from steel surfaces with solvent, vapor, cleaning compound, alkali, emulsifying agent, or steam.

SSPC-SP2 Hand Tool Cleaning Removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter by hand chipping, scraping, sanding, and wire brushing.

SSPC-SP3 Power Tool Cleaning Removes all loose mill scale, loose rust, loose paint, and other loose detrimental foreign matter by power wire brushing, power sanding, power grinding, power tool chipping, and power tool descaling. In conclusion, Primer colors could vary depending on final topcoat

SSPC-SP11 Bare Metal Power Cleaning When viewed without magnification, the surface shall be free of all visible oil, grease, dirt, dust, mill scale, rust, paint, oxides, corrosion products, and other foreign matter. Slight residues in pits if original surface is pitted. The surface profile shall not be less than 1 mil.

All specification data is supported by manufactures data page.

Please allow 12-24 hours before undocking after final coat of antifouling has been applied.

Thank you for opportunity to survey your vessel. And provide long term protection with SW marine coatings.
