About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, defining procurement requirements for approximately 1,120 semi-rigid coaxial Beam Position Monitor (BPM) jumper cable assemblies for the upgraded Storage Ring.

The supplier must manufacture, assemble, test, and deliver cable assemblies in three configurations: 525mm low-loss PTFE 141 cables, 650mm low-loss PTFE 141 cables, and an optional (525–725)mm variable-length configuration. All assemblies must feature right-angle SMA connectors rated to 200°C, operate across 0.05–18 GHz frequency range, maintain impedance control within ±10 picoseconds, achieve insertion loss (S21) ≥0.97 at 500MHz with ±0.0015 tolerance, and withstand vacuum bake-out at 200°C without degradation. Non-magnetic materials with permeability μ≤1.08 are required. Each cable must be labeled with color-coded heat shrink sleeves (Blue, Red, Green, White) at 80mm from connectors using format Item-C-XXXX with sequential serial numbering. Delivery comprises a first article (8 units) within 6 weeks, Production Batch 1 (92 units) within 6 weeks following first article approval, and Production Batch 2 (1,024 units) within 12 weeks following batch 1 approval. Hold points of 2 weeks and 12 weeks allow LBNL inspection and installation testing. The supplier must perform 100% testing including visual inspection, TDR length verification, VNA S21 measurement, magnetic permeability verification, and connector quality assessment. Comprehensive documentation requirements include detailed engineering specifications, inspection reports for each cable, certification of 200°C conformance, and submission via the Windchill project portal. Quality assurance obligations include maintaining an effective QA program, completing the ALS-U Supplier Quality Evaluation Survey (AL-1208-0209), submitting deviation requests for approval, and reporting nonconformances within 3 business days with LBNL disposition required before any rework or use-as-is decisions.

1 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Project Overview

ALS-U is an upgrade project to the LBNL Advanced Light Source (ALS). The ALS will be upgraded with a Multibend Achromat (MBA) lattice design to provide a soft x-ray source with orders of magnitude increase in brightness and coherence.

This SOW defines the procurement of critical Beam Position Monitor (BPM) jumper cable assemblies required for the upgraded Storage Ring (SR). These semi-rigid coaxial cables are essential for transmitting high-frequency signals from BPM pickups with minimal loss and distortion, ensuring accurate beam position measurement.

The cable assemblies shall be suitable for accelerator environments and must withstand vacuum bake-out temperatures up to 200 °C without degradation of mechanical or electrical integrity.

1.2 Description and Requirements

The purpose of this SOW is to define the requirements for the supplier to manufacture, test, and deliver a total of about 1,120 high-frequency, low-loss semi-rigid 141 coaxial cable assemblies with right angle SMA connectors for the ALS-U Storage Ring BPM system. The BPM jumper cable assembly must meet the following project-specific requirements:

• Precisely controlled impedance and phase matching (+-10 picosecond) to support

BPM measurement accuracy

• Low insertion loss at required operating frequencies 0.05 – 18 GHz to maintain signal integrity (S21 > 0.97 and +- 0.0015 at 500MHz)

• Vacuum bake-able at temperatures up to 200 deg C, with no degradation in electrical or mechanical performance

• Cable and connectors must be non-magnetic, with magnetic permeability μ ≤ 1.08.

• Right-angle SMA connectors on both ends, rated up to 200 deg C

• Mechanical formability and dimensional tolerances compatible with limited space constraints

1.3 Roles and Responsibilities

• University Procurement Representative: See subcontract for details.

• University Technical Representative: See subcontract for details.
