VII. BACKGROUND
Eccles Theater Since opening in 2016, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater has become a premiere cultural destination in downtown Salt Lake City and the Intermountain West.
Located on Main Street, the Eccles Theater welcomes visitors into a dramatic five-story glass lobby that sets the tone for an exceptional arts experience. Distinctive chandeliers, colorful balustrades, and a striking terrazzo floor create a sense of arrival and celebration.
Public spaces throughout the building feature selections from the Salt Lake County Visual Art Collection, reinforcing the theater’s commitment to the visual and performing arts.
The Eccles Theater includes the 2,500-seat Delta Performance Hall, designed for large-scale touring productions, and the Regent Street Black Box, a flexible performance and event space supporting local and regional artists in dance, theater, film, music, experimental performances, and private social events. Tin Angel at the Eccles features dining and cocktails on event nights.
Through strategic partnerships with Broadway at the Eccles and Live at the Eccles, the Eccles Theater hosts a diverse annual calendar ranging from Broadway tours to music, comedy, and spoken-word events. Together, the Eccles Theater and its partners play a vital role in supporting the arts, strengthening downtown Salt Lake City, and connecting local audiences with world-class performances.
About Art in Public Places Salt Lake County’s Art in Public Places is overseeing the public art component of the Eccles Theater's 10th Anniversary.
mailto:bwhitehead@saltlakecounty.gov
Art in Public Places curates two county-owned art collections, the Visual Art Collection and the Percent for Art Collection and is a program of the Salt Lake County Arts & Culture Division.
The Visual Art Collection is permanent and eclectic, with a unifying theme of Utah. The collection includes paintings, photographs, mixed media, and sculpture, with most of the pieces on display at the Salt Lake County Government Center.
The Percent for Art Collection includes site-specific works that range from murals and sculptures to mosaics, stained glass, and larger environmental works. These installations are integrated into the design and construction of all new county facilities to both enhance the facility and engage the community. Funding for Percent for Art pieces comes from legislation that allows up to one percent of a construction budget to go toward the purchase and installation of public art. Salt Lake County adopted this legislation in May 1982.
VIII. PURPOSE
The purpose of this public art Request for Proposal is to commission a temporary artwork to be installed along the full length of the Grand Lobby at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater in celebration of the theater’s Tenth Anniversary Season (September 2026 – August 2027). The selected artwork will remain on view for the duration of the anniversary year and will be experienced by thousands of visitors attending performances and events at the theater throughout the anniversary season.
Eccles Theater has emerged as a creative gem and regional cultural landmark – a diamond in both form and function and the Grand Lobby serves as the gathering space and threshold between downtown Salt Lake City and the performance experience. The commissioned artwork should reflect this role by conveying a sense of joy, energy, and anticipation, capturing the pulse of downtown and the excitement of live performance.
The artwork should serve as a visual marker of the Eccles Theater’s first ten seasons, celebrating its impact on the city and reinforcing its identity as a vibrant, creative, and enduring presence in Salt Lake City’s cultural life. Artists might consider reflecting on the attributes of a diamond—how raw material is transformed through time and pressure into something valued, reflective, and enduring.
Artists are encouraged to draw inspiration from the theater’s interior, designed by Pelli Clarke Pelli to reference Utah’s natural landscape through color, texture, and atmosphere.
Proposals may interpret this by exploring place, scale, or movement, positioning the Eccles Theater as a "cultural landscape" shaped by performance, people, and the rhythms of downtown.
The installation should feel welcoming and engaging to a wide range of audiences and enhance the overall visitor experience throughout the anniversary season.
The artwork selected for this project must be:
• A high-quality, original work of art.
• Durable and appropriate for long-term display in a high-traffic public setting.
• Safe for public viewing and interaction.
• Reasonably easy to maintain for the duration of the one-year installation.
• Suitable for installation within the Grand Lobby of the Eccles Theater.
• Appealing to a broad and diverse audience, including theater patrons of all ages.
The artwork selected for this project should also address one or more of the following goals:
• Convey a sense of joy, celebration, and creative energy.
• Reflect the Eccles Theater’s role as a cultural landmark and creative gem in downtown
Salt Lake City.
• Respond thoughtfully to the architecture, interior design, and public character of the
Grand Lobby.
• Incorporate innovative or non-traditional materials when appropriate.
Site Information and Technical Requirements
One public art location has been identified within the Eccles Theater Grand Lobby.
Artists or artist-led teams must address the site identified and highlighted in Exhibit D.
The measurements for this location are:
- From the floor to the ceiling is 50’,
- From the floor to the Rigging points is54.5’
- Length is 80- 82 feet across
Lighting is optional and not required for this project. If an artist chooses to include a lighting component, the Eccles Theater will provide a dimmer module that connects the artwork to the theater’s lighting system (see Exhibit J). This dimmer module will connect to the installation’s power source and must be fully concealed within the artwork or its mounting system
Hanging Artwork Requirements
For the hanging artwork location adjacent to the lobby windows, rigging points have been identified. Proposals for hanging works must meet the following requirements:
• Hanging artworks must be installed 10–11 feet above the finished floor to remain out of reach of the public.
• The rigging points can support a maximum load of 1,000 pounds. It is recommended that each rigging point carry no more than 500–750 pounds.
• Engineer drawings by a Utah-licensed engineer and Utah-stamped are required for all hanging installations.
• Installation must be performed by qualified professionals. A cost estimate for rigging and installation services can be provided upon request.
• If lighting is included, a 100-foot extension cord will be required, as the nearest electrical outlet is located on the Eccles Theater roof.
Fire and Safety Requirements
All materials used in the artwork must comply with fire and safety standards:
• Materials must be inherently fire-resistant and must not drip or melt when exposed to heat; or
• Materials must be treated with an approved flame retardant that causes the material to self-extinguish.
Artists or artist-led teams who are unsure whether their proposed materials require flame-retardant treatment are encouraged to inquire during the proposal process. Artists should lan to include any required flame-retardant treatment in their project budget.

Eccles Theatre Grand Lobby Installation
■ Total installation area 80-82'
■ Floor to ceiling area 50'
■ Floor to rigging points 54.5'
Exhibit F
Lobby Information
1. The hanging points can support a maximum load of 1000 lbs, although it is advised that each rigging point ideally bears between 500 – 750 lbs. Engineering drawings will be required for works over a certain weight amount.
2. Power is not available at the ceiling level. It is available at several levels on the tiers and on the exterior glass wall.
3. Usage of Eccles-owned chain hoists would need to be coordinated for installation and deinstallation but may not be available for the entire duration of the installation. The Eccles 1Ton Chain hoists would require additional rental equipment for power and control, as they are wired for use with the stage control systems, which would be the responsibility of the artist. Eccles owns several ¼ Ton chain hoists which are 120V. If a hoist is provided by the artist, does the chain hoist become County property after the removal of the piece? If the chain hoist is acquired using the overall artwork budget, ownership transfers to the ARTIST upon the piece's removal. However, if it is integral to the artwork/installation itself, ownership vests with the ECCLES.
4. What is the maximum height allowed for the installation?
The lobby interior has a nominal floor-to-ceiling height of 66 feet 9 inches, with a sloped ceiling system from east to west. Additional measurements for the tiers are as follows:
Wood ceiling: 66 feet 9 inches White ceiling: 49 feet 8 inches West electrics pipe: 31 feet 3 inches 1st Tier under gallery: 11 feet 5 inches 2nd Tier under gallery: 29 feet 1 inch
The base of the artwork must be positioned 9 to 10 feet above the Eccles lobby floor. This means that the potential height of the work can be up to 56 feet. Artists are encouraged to consider patron sightlines for their work.
EXHIBIT I
