About this file

This is a technical specification document for subsurface preparation requirements for floor finishes, specifically Section 09 05 16 from the Construction Specifications Institute (CSI) MasterFormat system. The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for preparing concrete substrates prior to installation of applied and resinous flooring materials, including removal of existing floor coverings, moisture and pH testing, remedial coating application, and floor leveling and repair as needed.

The specification details three primary product systems: moisture remediation coatings (high-solids epoxy systems with minimum 10 mils thickness and less than 0.1 perm permeance rating per ASTM E96/E96M), cementitious self-leveling underlayments (calcium aluminate cement-based, minimum 4,100 psi compressive strength at 28 days, suitable for most flooring types with varying cure times from 6 hours to 7 days depending on flooring type), and cementitious trowel-applied underlayments (not suitable for resinous finishes, minimum 4,000 psi compressive strength). Environmental requirements mandate substrate and ambient temperatures between 60-85 degrees Fahrenheit and maintenance of ambient conditions for specified periods before and after testing. Surface preparation must comply with ASTM F710 and ASTM D4259 standards, including abrasive blasting methods, moisture testing per ASTM F1869 and ASTM F2170, and pH measurement per ASTM F710. The specification references multiple related sections for joint sealants, resilient flooring, resinous flooring systems, and carpeting, and requires submittals including product data, compatibility documentation, and independent testing agency reports confirming moisture and pH test results.
