Leadership Development Program:
Phase 2-Leading Teams and Groups
Learning Overview:
This course prepares current Navy Civilian leaders to become more innovative, self-aware, and prepared to effectively lead and care for personnel and manage assigned resources at the organizational level. Training and developmental exercises focus on "mission" planning, team building, establishing command climate, and stewardship of resources.
Course Objectives:
As a result of this program, participants will:
· Understand and practice ways to encourage positive actions and effectively motivate, inspire, coach, and reward team members. Learn to build teams and set goals for performance.
· Examine how to delegate tasks and duties appropriately and have a clear understanding of the area of responsibility for self and others within a team.
· Understand and differentiate between different communication styles and channels and be able to communicate in different ways to most effectively distribute their message.
· Learn the steps for and practice the tools of building trust, developing active listening skills, and understanding the difference between coaching and mentoring relationships. Illustrate the benefits of each type of relationship and when they should be employed.
· Be familiar with challenges of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and practice ways to include and encourage diversity for a more inclusive environment.
· Identify and demonstrate an understanding of conflict management and conflict resolution as it applies to one-on-one and team relationships. Be able to apply conflict management tools.
· Identify how one’s own styles, strengths, and behaviors affect performance in a team and how team member’ interaction, communication, and cooperation impact team dynamics.
· Learn to be a steward of resources, be able to make decisions that produce high-quality results by applying technical knowledge, analyzing problems, and calculating risks.
· Examine the ability to provide an inclusive workplace that foster the motivation and development of others, facilitates effective delegation, empowerment, personal sacrifice, and risk for the good of the mission, as well as trust, confidence, cooperation and teamwork, and supports constructive resolution of conflicts.
