Fabric drops shall be placed in all catch basins prior to crushing and shaping.

Excavation

Remove existing topsoil along the edge of the road and excavate for proposed widths as shown on the Proposed Typical Section.

Excavate for proposed swale ditch.

Additional grading will also be required in areas where no HMA curb is proposed to remove the earth berm that is built up. The width of this grading is estimated to be within 10 feet of the edge of existing asphalt.

Excavated material shall be removed from site and disposed of.

Restoration will be paid for separately.

HMA Base Crushing and Shaping

The existing asphalt surface and underlying aggregate material shall be crushed to approximately 6 inches deep. Adjust depth of crushing as necessary to avoid mixing sand subbase material.

Matching the existing HMA shall be done at a straight clean joint created by saw cut or approved method. All cost associated with saw cutting and grading throughout this project is considered included in payment for HMA Base Crushing and Shaping.

Grade and compact the crushed material as shown on the Proposed Typical Section.

Salvaging Crushed Material

Grade crushed material on approaches for a proposed butt joint and smooth transition to mainline. Excess crushed material generated on intersection and driveway approaches shall be salvaged and spread on the mainline section.

Crushed material may be used at other locations where grading aggregate is required prior to paving.

Utility Casting Adjustments

All manhole castings, and water valve boxes shall be adjusted to finish grade as directed by the Engineer prior to resurfacing.

Replace manhole castings with East Jordan SELFLEVEL® castings.

Replace water valve boxes with East Jordan SELFLEVEL® valve box risers.

Existing monument boxes shall be removed and salvaged for the City/Engineer to replace following construction completion.

Intersection and Driveway Improvements

All approaches shall be treated on a case by case basis, and the limits of work may be adjusted, as directed by the Engineer.

Concrete curb and gutter shall be saved at street intersections.

Crush existing HMA surfaces. Salvage and remove crushed material as necessary for proposed grades. Salvaged material to be used on mainline road section.

Gravel approaches shall be excavated to provide 6 inches of Class I aggregate and shall be paved with 2 courses of HMA, 4EML (paid for as HMA Approach). Excavation is for new aggregate base is included in payment for Excavation, Earth.

Remove and replace the existing curb and gutter at 13th Street intersection. New curb in the west quadrant shall be graded to flow to a new low point at the existing catch basin off 13th Street and an HMA spillway will be constructed. Adjust catch basin as necessary. Detail grades will be provided for construction.

Paving

Contractor must pave leveling course HMA within 10 days of crushing.

The new HMA surface will be approximately 3 inches higher than the existing surface.

HMA curb shall be constructed where existing and as directed by the Engineer.

Permanent Pavement Markings

The Contractor shall install temporary pavement markings at centerline following each day of paving, in accordance with section 812 of the Standard Specifications for Construction. It shall be the Contractor’s responsibility to ensure that all temporary pavement markings adhere to the pavement surface until permanent markings are installed.

All permanent pavement markings, shapes, and dimensions shall conform to the MDOT Pavement Marking standard plans and special details.

Proposed edge lines (11 foot offset from centerline) shall be painted at a 6 inch width.

Install railroad crossing markings and bike lane symbols as directed by the engineer.

Permanent Signing

Existing signs that are in poor condition, faded or missing will be replaced as directed by the Engineer.

New bike lane signs shall be installed.
