About the company
Travelers & Immigrants Aid's Heartland Alliance For Human Needs & Human Rights (Travelers) is a non-profit organization based in Chicago that provides services to those at the highest risk of being victims or perpetrators of gun violence. It aims to create alternative paths, decrease criminal legal system involvement, and build community infrastructure to promote long-term safety and opportunity in marginalized communities.
Travelers has received several significant federal grant awards from the Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs and Bureau of Justice Assistance. Through the Congressionally Recommended Awards and Second Chance Act Reentry Initiative programs, it has secured funding for the Rapid Employment and Development Initiative (READI) Chicago project, which connects high-risk individuals in five Chicago neighborhoods with transitional jobs, cognitive behavioral interventions, and supportive services. READI Chicago has demonstrated success in reducing serious violence and arrests among participants. Additionally, Travelers has received grants to establish the READI National Center for Safe Communities, which provides field support, program innovation, and knowledge advancement to build and elevate the field of community violence intervention. Travelers also implements the READI FOR REENTRY program, delivering pre- and post-release services to men returning from prison to Chicago who are at high risk for gun violence involvement. Northwestern University and the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority have been sub-award partners on some of these initiatives.
