About The Living Desert
The Living Desert, also known as The Living Desert The Living Desert Division and doing business as Living Desert, is a 1200-acre facility that specializes in the plants and animals found throughout the deserts of the world. Many exotic and endangered species can be seen in natural surroundings at this non-profit organization and veterinary hospital. Registered as a corporate entity and tax-exempt organization in SAM.gov since 2004, The Living Desert provides native California plant materials, habitat restoration services, species conservation efforts, and environmental education programs to support various federal agencies and grant programs.
Through several prime cooperative agreements totaling over $790,000 from the Department of the Interior's Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and Fish and Wildlife Service Region 8, The Living Desert has performed work under programs like Plant Conservation and Restoration Management (CFDA 15.245), Endangered Species Recovery Implementation (CFDA 15.657), and Threatened and Endangered Species (CFDA 15.246). Key projects included restoring degraded desert tortoise habitat on BLM lands, manually planting native forage species, monitoring invasive plants, and developing habitat restoration plans for the Desert Tortoise Recovery Unit. The Living Desert also restored riverside areas by outplanting mesquite, constructed a breeding facility for headstarting pond turtles, and evaluated feasibility for reintroducing pronghorn antelope in partnership with the California Department of Fish & Wildlife and National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. Additionally, The Living Desert conducted education and outreach to promote behavior change and reduce harmful human-tortoise interactions as a subrecipient.
