About Intertribal Buffalo Council
The Intertribal Buffalo Council (ITBC) is a federally chartered Indian organization that has been serving buffalo and indigenous people since 1992. With 79 Member Tribes and a collective herd of 20,000 buffalo, ITBC facilitates the management of these herds and provides related services to tribes. ITBC is a tribal government and federally recognized Indian tribe registered to receive federal contract and grant awards.
Through prime federal contracts, ITBC has provided tribal seed collection services to support the restoration of native plants and ecological systems. For example, ITBC was awarded a firm fixed price contract by the Department of the Interior National Park Service to provide indigenous seed collection crews to gather grass and forb seeds from park and tribal lands to aid biodiversity and ecological integrity efforts at Wind Cave National Park. ITBC has been recognized as a subject matter expert organization capable of assisting federal agencies and tribal partners with indigenous-focused ecological projects.
ITBC has received several significant federal grants to conduct research, provide education and outreach, and support climate-smart initiatives related to buffalo conservation and management for Native American tribes. A $100,000 grant from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service funded the development of an Indigenous Knowledge report summarizing traditional ecological knowledge about the Yellowstone bison to inform species status assessments. ITBC was awarded nearly $5 million from the USDA to expand climate-smart buffalo meat markets across its 80 member tribal nations. Other grants support improving biosecurity of tribal buffalo herds through research on disease transmission, as well as conducting regional necropsy trainings, distributing supplies, and providing diagnostic fees to increase surveillance of zoonotic diseases impacting buffalo and human health.
