Research on Technical Improvement of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to be used in Healthcare Settings for Infection Control, including Ebola and other Emerging Pathogens
The healthcare response to Ebola has shown that current PPE used for infection control in healthcare settings is not ideal. Design and technical flaws reflect the changing demands on PPE and ongoing evolution of intent for its use. Improvements are needed to make PPE more uniform, with greater assurance of protection and less interference with healthcare delivery, while making errors in use much less probable. Specific elements limiting the effectiveness of currently available designs and technologies include challenges wearer discomfort related to heat and ventilation, fluid penetration through materials, fit and sizing of apparel, and ease of correct donning and doffing. The objective of this research will focus on improving the material and design of gowns and respirators to address those and other issues, and demonstration of scalable production capability within US industry.

Epicenters for the Prevention of Healthcare Associated Infections (HAI) - Cycle II
The purpose of this FOA is to expand the number of CDC Prevention Epicenters to translate basic, epidemiologic and technologic discoveries into new strategies for preventing healthcare-associated transmission of Ebola and/or infectious pathogens (viral or bacterial) that can be spread by mechanisms similar to Ebola. This might include, but is not limited to, project proposals that focus on the effectiveness of personal protective equipment against such pathogens, healthcare worker self-contamination with pathogens, or the role of the healthcare environment in pathogen transmission.

Centers for Outbreak Analytics and Disease Modeling
Forecast - This new CDC cooperative agreement will develop a network of innovators to design, prototype, test, and scale innovative capabilities for improving analytics, modeling and forecasting to support decision makers during outbreaks of infectious diseases (both known and newly emerging) in the United States. The purpose of this cooperative agreement program is to save lives through improving public health response to disease threats. The primary objective of the cooperative agreement is to enhance communication and collaboration between innovators, integrators, and implementers in analytic methods with public health partners at federal, state, territorial, local and tribal levels to improve outbreak response through outbreak analytics and disease modeling. Partnership and collaboration between academia, public health, health care and the private sector is at the core of this funding opportunity.
