About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funds psychosocial and structural support services for young breast cancer survivors (YBCS) and metastatic breast cancer patients through CFDA 93.376, with the most recent grant awards issued September 30, 2019, though a current opportunity (CDC-RFA-DP-24-0061) with an updated due date of May 6, 2024 is actively soliciting applications.

The program has not disbursed awards for over seven years. Six cooperative agreements were issued in 2019 totaling $17.4 million in federal obligations, yielding an average award magnitude of approximately $2.9 million. Awards supported five-year periods of performance with 12-month budget cycles. No recent grant opportunities are currently open; the 2024 solicitation closed May 6, 2024. This represents a significant gap in program activity and may signal either inactive funding or incomplete listing data.

The program funds organizations and entities that expand access to psychosocial and structural support services—specifically peer support networks, patient navigation, genetic counseling, mental health interventions, lifestyle programs, survivorship resources, caregiver support, and provider training—targeting young women diagnosed with breast cancer before age 45 and women with metastatic breast cancer. Recent awards emphasized reducing disparities in underserved populations including African American women, Latino women, Asian/Pacific Islander women, Native American women, Ashkenazi Jewish women, LGBT communities, low-income groups, women with disabilities, and rural populations.

All six awards identified in the portfolio were Cooperative Agreements issued by CDC. Representative recent awards include Living Beyond Breast Cancer's Young Women's Initiative ($3.28 million) providing evidence-based information and tailored resources to underserved groups; the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services' Program for Breast Cancer in Young Women ($2.82 million) implementing multi-level public health approaches across four priority populations; and Sanford Health's program ($2.82 million) expanding peer mentorship, survivorship programming, and palliative care navigation across four regional service areas.

Eligible applicants include government organizations, nonprofits (501(c)(3) and non-501(c)(3)), for-profit organizations (including small businesses), colleges and universities, tribal organizations, and community-based and faith-based organizations. The prolonged gap between award activity and current opportunity posting warrants confirmation of program continuity and funding availability before committing proposal resources.
