About this program
The Department of Health and Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) manages Prevention of Disease, Disability, and Death through Immunization and Control of Respiratory and Related Diseases (CFDA 93.083), a program that funds laboratory-confirmed surveillance, vaccine effectiveness studies, and epidemiologic research on influenza, respiratory syncytial virus, HPV, and related respiratory pathogens in domestic and international settings. The most recent grant award under this program was disbursed September 30, 2021.
Program activity has slowed significantly in recent years. Thirteen total awards span from 2013 to 2021, with award frequency declining markedly: five awards in 2015, then one each in 2016 and 2018, two in 2017, and one in 2021. Combined federal dollars obligated total $55.9 million. All funding is CDC-administered; the top funders by federal dollars are five CDC initiatives totaling $20.8 million, followed by a single $18.3 million award, two awards of $5.6 million combined, one award of $5.7 million, and one award of $4.9 million. The portfolio is predominantly Cooperative Agreements (85 percent; 11 awards) with a smaller share of Project Grants (15 percent; 2 awards). Cooperative agreement periods of performance run 1 to 5 years, with non-competitive continuation eligibility contingent on satisfactory progress and federal interest.
Recent awards reflect two substantive tracks. Vaccine effectiveness research has dominated: awards fund population-based surveillance networks measuring influenza vaccine effectiveness in hospitalized adults (ranging from approximately $4.7 million to $5.7 million per award), including studies at University of Pittsburgh, Vanderbilt, and Michigan health systems. International surveillance comprises the second track: a $5.1 million agreement supported public health epidemiology of influenza in China (2018 award, completion 2024); a $18.3 million award funded influenza and respiratory virus research across Southeast Asia and the Western Pacific (2016 award); and a $4.2 million agreement supported influenza and respiratory infection epidemiology in Malawi (2014 award). A single $3.35 million 2021 award supported the Human Papillomavirus Roundtable's national network of over 70 member organizations working to raise HPV vaccination rates and prevent HPV-related cancers.
One current grant opportunity is open: RFA-IP-27-035, "Expanded Surveillance for Pediatric Infectious Diseases," posted July 28, 2026, funds a cooperative agreement to establish a network of U.S. institutions conducting standardized prospective surveillance of pediatric acute respiratory illness and acute gastroenteritis, with mandatory core surveillance in inpatient and emergency department settings and optional components for outpatient surveillance, immune response studies, and immunization studies. Applicant types include state and local governments, higher education institutions (public and private), 501(c)(3) nonprofits, tribal governments and organizations, special district governments, county governments, city and township governments, for-profit organizations, and independent school districts.
