About this program
The Department of Health and Human Services Administration for Community Living awards grants under CFDA 93.052 to fund multifaceted support services for family caregivers and older relative caregivers, with the most recent grant awards issued on October 1, 2025.
The program funds information services, counseling, caregiver training, respite care, and supplemental services delivered through state and territory agencies on aging to family caregivers and older relatives providing care. Recent cooperative agreements support state-level implementation of the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers, including respite retreats, legal document assistance, caregiver assessment tools, and awareness campaigns in rural and underserved communities. For example, Montana received funding to expand respite care, legal clinics, and food programs across frontier counties; Pennsylvania evaluated its PA CareKit toolkit with university partners to measure impacts on caregiver burden and Medicaid expenditures; and Minnesota developed a virtual caregiver resource center and closed-loop referral system to connect caregivers to long-term services and supports.
The program has disbursed 2,669 awards since 2001. Over the past five years, award volume has averaged roughly 60 grants per year, with 60 awards in 2025 as of early October. Combined federal dollars obligated total $4.77 billion, with negligible non-federal cost-share. The portfolio is predominantly Project Grants (59 percent, 1,584 awards) and Formula Grants (29 percent, 787 awards), with smaller shares of Block Grants (11 percent) and Cooperative Agreements (1 percent, 15 awards). ACL is the sole funding agency under this Assistance Listing. Recent award magnitudes range widely: formula grants to states vary from approximately $281 thousand to $46.1 million depending on state population and caregiver demographics, while cooperative agreements for national capacity-building and state implementation projects typically fall in the $372 thousand to $871 thousand range.
A Cooperative Agreement opportunity (HHS-2026-ACL-AOA-CGNS-0032) for state implementation of the National Strategy to Support Family Caregivers was posted on June 11, 2026, with a due date of July 22, 2026; eligible applicants are state governments. Grantees receive two-year project periods with up to six months permitted for planning and cross-agency coordination, followed by implementation, and must submit sustainability plans at the midpoint. No formula grant opportunity is currently open; those awards are distributed by statute to states based on an intrastate funding formula administered through designated area agencies on aging.
