About this program

The Department of Health and Human Services Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) awards Project Grants under the 988 and Behavioral Health Crisis Services Programs (CFDA 93.00R) to expand post-contact follow-up services for individuals who reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline by phone, chat, or text, with the most recent award on September 30, 2026.

The program funds capacity-building and service delivery across three core activity streams: crisis center follow-up programs providing systematic post-crisis outreach and care coordination; tribal-focused crisis response initiatives that strengthen culturally responsive 988 partnerships and integration with tribal behavioral health systems; and state and territory-level infrastructure improvements to expand call/chat/text answering capacity and 988 network coordination. Representative recent awards include Vibrant Emotional Health's $254.6 million award (May 2026) to operate the national 988 Lifeline administrator and maintain infrastructure serving 60 million Americans across five years; the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma's $1.5 million award to expand culturally responsive crisis services across southeastern Oklahoma; and Centerstone's $250,000 award to expand follow-up capacity across 20 rural and 2 urban counties in Tennessee. Smaller follow-up-focused awards typically range from $183,000 to $250,000 to individual crisis centers.

All 124 awards distributed since September 2023 have been Project Grants. SAMHSA funds the full portfolio, obligating $2.22 billion in combined federal dollars. The award cadence shows 73 awards in FY 2023 and 51 awards in 2026 year-to-date. Three grant opportunities are currently open with a due date of July 17, 2026: FG-26-004 (Crisis Center Follow-Up Programs), FG-26-003 (Tribal Response), and FG-26-002 (State and Territory Capacity). Eligible applicants include domestic public and private nonprofits, states, territories, tribes, tribal organizations, Indian Health Service facilities, and higher education institutions.
