About this program

The Department of Education Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services funds the Disability Innovation Fund (CFDA 84.421) to support innovative activities aimed at increasing competitive integrated employment for individuals with disabilities, with the most recent grant awards issued on October 1, 2024.

The program has accelerated significantly in recent years, moving from six awards in 2016 to twenty in 2024, with a cumulative portfolio of 70 awards totaling $730.8 million in federal dollars obligated since 2015. All awards are Project Grants. Recent grants support workforce development initiatives including extended reality training for vocational rehabilitation, career awareness and employment programs for youth with disabilities, technology-enhanced job retention services, transition partnerships across multiple states, pathways to competitive integrated employment from subminimum wage positions, and employer-focused neurodiversity workforce inclusion. Representative awards from the October 2024 cohort include $10 million for "Competitive Integrated Employment in Creative Careers," $9.89 million for "XR for VR: Using Extended Reality to Close the Career Awareness Gap," and $10.82 million for "Families Achieving Self Sufficiency Together." Earlier cohorts funded larger initiatives, including a $20.4 million career advancement model demonstration and multiple $18 million workforce pathway projects in 2021, alongside more focused interventions such as a $13.67 million subminimum wage to competitive integrated employment transition initiative in 2023.

The most recently posted grant opportunity closed on July 8, 2024 (solicitation ED-GRANTS-040924-001), which invited applications from state governments, nonprofits, school districts, and other entities for model demonstration projects focused on creating a 21st-century workforce of youth and adults with disabilities.
