National Priorities: PER- AND POLYFLUOROALKYL SUBSTANCES
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is issuing this Request for Applications (RFA) to better understand the impacts of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on water quality and availability across the U.S. The Agency is seeking new information on 1) the fate and transport of short (C4 to C7) and long-chain (≥ C8) PFAS in the environment, including per- and poly-fluorinated carboxylic acids, sulfonic acids, and ethers, and associated precursor and transformation products; 2) comprehensive human and ecosystem exposure to PFAS; and 3) PFAS toxicity, modes of action, physiologically-based pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, and other topics related to hazard assessment. Proposals may address any or all of these topic areas in support of the development of robust risk assessments for human and ecological exposure to PFAS in water.

Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program for College and University Students
The Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development seeks applications for an Environmental Research Apprenticeship Program to provide on-site training to undergraduate and graduate students at its research facility in Ada, Oklahoma. Eligible applicants include universities, nonprofits, state and local governments, and tribal organizations located in the U.S. and its territories. Successful applicants will design a five-year training program to place approximately 10 students per year at the EPA research center, providing financial support, matching trainees to research themes in areas like pollution prevention and greenhouse gas reduction, and overseeing training plans and safety requirements. Proposals will be evaluated based on educational merit, management approach, and applicant qualifications, and are due by May 15, 2024. The EPA aims to award one cooperative agreement of up to $800,000 over five years to fund the student training program. Trainees will conduct their research and training directly at the EPA research facility in Ada, Oklahoma.
