Description
- Description
- The purpose of this project is to quantify the effectiveness of wastewater treatment on the removal and/or selection of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genes. The project will evaluate the process for removing antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genes throughout the wastewater treatment train including measuring concentrations/loads entering and being discharged from wastewater treatment. The project will provide an understanding of the fate and transport of antimicrobial resistant bacteria and genes in effluent discharge by monitoring a river that is set to receive wastewater treatment plant discharge for the first time. A key focus of the project is on the clinical relevance of resistant genes and bacteria that are discharged from the treatment process so that risks can be put into perspective with other industrial and agricultural sectors connected to antimicrobial resistance (AMR).activities:activities to achieve project objectives include breaking down the wastewater treatment process into unit operations and determining changes in AMR quantities among system components and in relation to treatment facility operational parameters. Research framework will integrate antimicrobial resistance gene and resistant bacteria quantification and genomic and metagenomic-based DNA sequencing to determine AMR mass balances and changes in clinically relevant genotypes from treatment facility influent through the treatment train and ultimately to facility outflows. Subrecipient:the project team plans to collaborate with florida gulf coast university ($19,882) and washington state university ($29,197+ cost share of $7,837 for the total of $37,034) for wastewater treatment sample collection. The team additionally plan to collaborate with marquette university ($288,872 + cost share of $72,221 for the total of $361,093) for additional wastewater treatment sample collection and mass balance calculations through unit operations. Outcomes:key outputs include annual and final technical reports, publications, as well as 1) information on the temporal dynamics of AMR into two wastewater treatment plants using historical data over a ten-year period to understand how influent loads have changed over time, 2) new information on what unit operations are most successful in removing AMR, and 3)new information on the impact of treatment plant discharge into surface waters. Intended beneficiaries include state and local regulators, wastewater utilities, water quality program managers and the communities served by public water systems.
