The Santa Cruz Metropolitan Transit District (METRO) received a $20,381,950 federal grant award from the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Transit Administration (FTA) under the Buses and Bus Facilities Formula, Competitive, and Low or No Emissions Programs (CFDA 20.526). The funding will enable METRO to replace 12 aging diesel and CNG buses with 8 new 60-foot and 4 new 40-foot hydrogen fuel cell electric buses (FCEBS). The project will also construct a mobile hydrogen fueling station and make facility upgrades to accommodate the new FCEBS. Additionally, the grant will support workforce training and development. The project aims to improve air quality, safety, reliability, and the state of good repair for METRO's transit system serving the City of Santa Cruz. The award was made on September 19, 2024, with a planned completion date of June 30, 2027.
