About this opportunity
The Federal Transit Administration is soliciting applications for approximately $21 million in competitive grants under the Buses and Bus Facilities Program, with applications due September 21, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. Eastern Time.
Eligible applicants include designated recipients, states (including territories and Washington D.C.), local governmental entities, and federally recognized Indian tribes that operate or allocate funds to fixed-route bus service. Eligible subrecipients also include private nonprofit organizations engaged in public transportation. For projects in rural (non-urbanized) areas, proposals must be submitted by a state, either individually or as part of a statewide application, except for projects proposed by Indian tribes.
The program finances capital projects to purchase, lease, or rehabilitate transit buses and related equipment, and to acquire, construct, lease, or rehabilitate bus-related facilities. The maximum Federal share is 80 percent for most projects, with exceptions allowing 85 percent for transit buses compliant with the Clean Air Act or accessible to people with disabilities, and 90 percent for equipment and facility components related to low- or zero-emission buses or accessibility. For zero-emission projects, applicants must budget 5 percent of Federal funds for workforce development unless they certify less funding is needed.
No single recipient may receive more than 10 percent of available funding. The program requires a minimum of 15 percent of awarded funds to support rural area projects. Prior year awards ranged from $205,000 to $36 million.
FTA will evaluate applications using criteria including demonstration of need, demonstration of benefits, planning and local or regional prioritization, local financial commitment, project implementation strategy, and technical, legal, and financial capacity. Selections will be made within 75 days of the application due date. Applications must be submitted electronically through Grants.gov using opportunity ID FTA-2026-010-TPM-BUS. The program falls under CFDA 20.526.
