The Burns Paiute Tribe was awarded a $624,480 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Tribal Justice Assistance Program (CFDA 16.596). The grant funding will be used to enhance the Tribe's Tribal Court by adding a half-time probation officer, enabling the Court to provide direct supervision of court-involved individuals and shift towards a restorative justice model. Additionally, the grant will support a major revision of the Tribe's legal codes to align with new priorities and federal legislation, as well as implement an e-court system to improve remote access and accessibility for the community. The project aims to strengthen the Tribal Court's capacity to supervise offenders, connect them to services, and reintegrate them into the community through culturally-appropriate practices. The 5-year grant project will commence on October 1, 2023 and run through September 30, 2028.

The Aleut Community of St. Paul Island was awarded a $882,077 Project Grant from the Department of Justice Office of Justice Programs Bureau of Justice Assistance under the Justice System Infrastructure Program for Indian Tribes (TJSIP). The grant will support collaboration between the Aleut Community, City of St. Paul Island, and Southcentral Foundation to develop and enhance programming for tribal members involved in the criminal justice system on St. Paul Island. This includes integrating risk and needs assessment tools, reducing substance abuse issues through culturally appropriate treatment, and providing alternatives to incarceration. The City of St. Paul Island will receive support to improve law enforcement services through equipment purchases and detention facility renovations including a crisis stabilization room. Assistance will also be provided for families affected by issues like historical trauma, alcohol and substance abuse disorders, and suicide ideation through cognitive behavioral therapy and other evidence-based prevention programs. The five-year grant period runs from October 1, 2022 to September 30, 2027.

Applications are solicited for the Tribal Justice System Infrastructure Program Training and Technical Assistance (TJSIP TTA) Initiative, designed to assist tribes with the planning and implementation process for renovating and/or expanding correctional facilities, multi-purpose justice centers (including courts, police departments, and/or corrections), alternatives to incarceration facilities, and transitional living facilities.
